Windows chief Steven Sinofsky has just been confirmed to appear at the ninth D: AllThingsDigital conference next week, and the smart odds are that he'll use the high-profile event to give the public its first view of Windows 8, the next version of Microsoft's operating system.

In all this, I can't help but wonder on MS business plan. Windows 7 is selling very well, it's likely many corporations will be making the switch, and now they throw 8 into the mix. Surely it will make many wait to be sure they don't miss out on the next big thing. And the wait would likely extend well after the actual release, as people wait to see if it is a winner, or a flop. Maybe they are taking a page from the Apple playbook. Always, and I mean always, hype the next product no matter what it's got to really bring to the table. As long as you make people think you've got a winner, perception IS reality.

I am not that optimistic about a beta, it is a speculation that Sinofsky will show a tablet version(or ARM version as intel put it a few days ago).

I Don't Know...

Other than a few appearance mods Win 8 feels like a clone of Win 7. I have 8 installed on a partition on my C:/ drive...now on my desktop PC I have Win XP Home on VirtualBox in my Vista OS, Windows 7 on a partition and win 8 7955 on another partition:confused: lots o' fun!!!

I have XP/win7U/7955/winTPC all on 1 HDD, two weeks ago I took it to a PC shop for check-up. the guy asked me if I were a MS people.

I let him copy the 7955 ISO and didn't have to pay anything for the check-up.

Wtf are you talking about
I mean duh, windows 7 uses vista drivers so it's Vista sp4 no matter what anyone says it's window dressing.
So with that in mind the fact that the same drivers work for 8 as 7 I guess that means windows 8 is vista sp5. Nothing new because Microsoft is too afraid to take any real risks after the vista flop. So were all doomed to another decade of x86 processors and crappy old hardware because some idoit in Arkansas still has a printer that wouldn't work.
I'm truely saddend by this but I guess it doesn't really matter considering how amd must have just given up anyway. PassMark Intel vs AMD CPU Benchmarks - High End I guess when my computer becomes obsolete I'll just get an ipad 3. Oh wait my computer will never be obsolete thanks Microsoft.
I'm not sure but I think he means there is nothing really new other than a few minor graphical changes and little tidbits. Legacy hardware support has nothing to due to making an OS different.

September sounds about right, in considering the speed of how the builds have been going the past month, it is probably safe to say 5-7 months for a beta.

I somehow keep thinking that Windows 7 has actually been released too early in order to get as much people off Vista as possible, as soon as possible, because of its dramatic past of negative comments and reviews, and that many features we've seen through Win8 leaks could have already been implemented.
This is also why I don't really understand Microsoft pushing Win8 so soon, too. With 7 being embraced in a much better light than Vista, they have a better starting point in evolving their OS, and I personally see no reason for "rushing things". Maybe that's just me, though.

The fact is that, as much as Windows 7 was good, 8 will be even better, even if the name stays vNext *shivers*
