Windows 8.1 will be getting nearly 30 patches later today

Microsoft plans to release over 30 non-security patches for various versions of Windows later today, but Windows 8.1 will be the subject of the vast majority of those downloads.

The company has released summaries of all these optional patches on its support page, and it's clear that most of them are for fixing problems in Windows 8.1, with some for Windows RT 8.1 and a few for Windows 7. Microsoft released a number of security patches for versions of Windows last week as part of "Patch Tuesday".

So far, Microsoft has not released any specific information on what these patches are supposed to fix, but that should be revealed when they start rolling out via Automatic Update later today.

Thanks, yes I had been reading about them. Ones I felt to try were ones I felt I needed as of now. Ones not sure of, I held off on doing. Can effect everyone differently I see according to there system what is on it.
Exactly. I have never experienced a problem with an update, hotfix or patch from Microsoft, and then there are others that run into problems EVERY month.

Yes, your either very PC smart or luckier then others ! ;) I'll say make sure to have a system restore point before hand. I get your point similar to a driver update, we always do read it's fixes before installing it.

Finaly found a solution in the spanish community Microsoft forum that works for me:

1.- Uninstall KB3045999. DON'T REBOOT.
2,. Install KB3022345 and reboot system (if there is no error)
3.- Install KB3045999 and reboot system.

Seems the problem is the order of installation of the updates.
Hope it helps.

How stupid I feel after checking each of the 20 optional updates out one by one. None of them really applied to my pc's and installation evidently did a number on each pc. Luckily I had backups just prior to the date of the Windows Updates and was able to return to my previous status on both pc's. A lesson learned - don't install unless you know WHAT you are installing - don't rely on MS for always telling you the consequences of installing an update . I won't do that again! My SFC and DISM are both working again without being confused by these 20 updates. No telling what will happen when Windows 10 hits installation date - just be cautious.

I guess that depends on your installation and other factors as I've not run into any issues with them installed (again). I say again, because this is a fresh install as I had to do an OS reinstall for an issue I had prior to these updates.

But yeah, Microsoft could do a better job of telling you what these "optional" updates are for, and why you need or want them. Especially if they're going to pump 20 of them to you at a time.

2 more "Optional " Updates today today, which I hid due to no applicability to my pc's. I think many of these are pertaining to Windows Phone, which I do not have. I am watching them closer now and just hiding them as they come out.

One of the options is for a virtual machine installation, so won't apply to most. Installed a couple of the new ones that applied to me, hid a few more, and nothing seems broken for now.

Well, I'm at a loss ... and I'm not exactly a windows novice !!
I have 26 optional updates listed + silverlight + skype !!
I have been checking almost every specific info web page at MS but I fail to see from those data/explanations if those updates bear any relevance to my system config ??
Is this a swift roll-out to ease up the jump to W10 ???

Yes & no... Not the answer you were looking for right?

Some are to ease the upgrade, some are fixes for new technologies/hardware, and some are fixes for old outstanding problems that are getting done on Windows 10 and being "downstreamed" to the previous OS versions.
