Windows 8.1 - Update to from Windows 8

I'm thinking of upgrading from Windows 8 to 8.1

I've put it off because I heard about problems that some users have had.

I also use 'classicshell' which I want to continue to use (and which needs updating aswell) and I'm just wondering if 'Classicshell' will work once I've updated, and then I will update 'Classicshell' once I have 8.1 installed.

So if I download 8.1 from the Windows app store I will have the latest, because I've been reading about users of 8.1 having to update to be able to get future updates, and if they don't install a certain update they will not be able to get any more (is this correct?): If I install Windows 8.1 does this mean that I will have all updates needed and there is nothing else to worry about?

Hello Autobahn, and welcome to Eight Forums.

When you update from Window 8 via the Store, you'll actually upgrade to Windows 8.1 Update now.

There may be a few more updates afterwards, so it wouldn't hurt to check for and install any Windows Updates now and after updating.

If you have any 3rd party AV or firewall programs installed, then it would be recommended to disable or uninstall them until the update has finished to prevent them from interfering with the upgrade.

It would also be recommended to back up anything that you do not want to lose to be safe. For example, if you get a power outage in the middle of an upgrade.

I did a 'sfc scan' and the results I got was: Corrupt files were found but were unable to fix some of them.

Reading the CBS log file it mentions a lot packages it failed to open, packages 1-52.

Below is package 1 that failed to open:

Failed to open package file: \\?\C:\Windows\Servicing\Packages\Package_1_for_KB2737084~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.2.1.0.mum [HRESULT = 0x80070002 - ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND]
2014-04-03 20:16:26, Info CBS Package not in store, assuming not applicable: Package_1_for_KB2737084~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.2.1.0.

It might have something to do with some of the pre installed apps, which I uninstalled a while back?

I am wondering if this will cause any problem when I update to 8.1 update 1?

Does anyone know what these packages are that failed to open and why are they not opening?

KB2737084 appears to about a security update for the .NET Framework 4.5.

MS12-074: Description of the security update for the .NET Framework 4.5 on Windows 8, Windows RT, and Windows Server 2012: November 13, 2012

Since Windows 8.1 Update is done through Windows Update, you shouldn't have any issues as long as you are able to install Windows Updates.

There are 52 packages that have this error!

It sounds like you may have cleaned up the component store. If so, then the only issue you'll have is not being able to uninstall them.

Yes, I used the Windows Disc cleanup and while it was cleaning Windows updates it froze.
That could be where the problem occurred.

One other question (and thanks for answering so many of them) :
Before updating do I have to update all drivers?
Once updated to 8.1 update 1 and I have any problems could I not update the drivers then?

No problem. The drivers from Windows 8.1 would be fine in Windows 8.1 Update as well.

What I meant, was that I have drivers only for Windows 8 at the moment.

While they should still work, it would be best to check to see if any newer versions are available specific for 8.1.

@Mansome: That did the trick.

I have now installed 8.1 update 1 and it went smoothly.

The only problem I am getting is from 'Cuetools' which Avast is now saying has a virus and I can't open.

I am sure it is a false positive.

Hey, i just tried to update my Windows to 8.1 from Windows 8 trough the store but when i got to the restart stage my screen went black instead of the Windows logo and the %. Any thoughts on what could be the problem?

If you like, you can download an official Windows 8.1 ISO file using OPTION ONE in the tutorial below.

Afterwards, you can use it to upgrade to 8.1 using OPTION TWO in the tutorial on the first page without losing anything.

Um, i could have a little problem right know. I just tried to restart my PC. And it's gets to the same stage as erlier just a black screen am nothing happens?
is there some way to launch safe mode on launch?
