I noticed there are links to download the Windows 8.1 update, but those are for technet subscribers. Are there any public links yet?
Reason I ask, I want to download/burn the ISO, so when I format my system, I have a disc to reinstall windows. Can this 8.1 update be installed fresh? Or should I download windows 8.1 x64 iso, then just patch it after a clean install to windows 8.1 update??

Hi Brink

Looks like your method can't get an X-64 version if you are using the 32 bit windows - which could be a bit of a "bummer" too.

Why on earth Ms can't just provide the Iso's is just beyond me -- much easier for everyone. I've still got TechNet until October so I'm OK but it must be really annoying for people who want to do CLEAN installs without all the initial bloatware on their computers.

When I buy a machine I used to bargain with the shop staff and get a Free Retail Windows OS thrown in - so I'd immediately uninstall the "Factory" rubbish and clean install Windows. Now I have to load the TechNet Windows which really isn't what TechNet editions are meant for.

Cheers

@jimbo45, The TechNet ISO's will read and use the OEM embedded keys and activate with them. I think you'll find the TechNet ISO's are identical to the retail DVD's. I was able to do a clean install on my laptop with my TechNet 8.0 ISO and use the original factory key.

I got my 8.1 upgrade free (from win 8) direct from microsoft, it auto downloads and installs whilst you can carry on using the pc, it changed no settings either. There is a new version out better than the original, someone has been doing some good work on it.

That's old news for most of use here. I did that once on my laptop and it didn't go well. I ended up doing a clean install using my TechNet 8.1 ISO to get my laptop back to a normal state. It works for a lot of people but not everybody is so lucky.

Yeah, that's cool. Sorry if my comments came across the wrong way. I didn't mean anything by them other than that the Store Update doesn't always work that well. I probably shouldn't have quoted you directly. The OP looks to be trying to get an ISO with the Update included. Not an easy thing if you don't have TechNet or MSDN.
