Windows 8.1 update check wakes laptop, won't sleep again

My general practice is to put my laptop to sleep when I'm done for the day, leaving it plugged in. I wait until it confirms sleep mode (flashing power button) and then close the lid (it stays asleep).

The next morning I come back and the laptop is on and quite warm.

powercfg /LASTWAKE shows this:
Wake History Count - 1
Wake History [0]
Wake Source Count - 0


I checked Windows Update and it did check for updates at 6:00AM this morning. So that must have awakened it. BUT... why didn't the laptop go back to sleep?

I went to the Action Center and discovered that the maintenance check is done at 3AM, but the checkbox to automatically wake the computer from sleep was unchecked... which means it should not launch if the laptop is sleeping. In any event, I have set it to 11PM and will see if that makes a difference.
