Windows 8.1 support from Microsoft will end on January 10, 2023

As a reminder, Windows 8.1 will reach end of support on January 10, 2023, at which point technical assistance and software updates will no longer be provided. If you have devices running Windows 8.1, we recommend upgrading them to a more current, in-service, and supported Windows release. If devices do not meet the technical requirements to run a more current release of Windows, we recommend that you replace the device with one that supports Windows 11.

Microsoft will not be offering an Extended Security Update (ESU) program for Windows 8.1. Continuing to use Windows 8.1 after January 10, 2023 may increase an organization’s exposure to security risks or impact its ability to meet compliance obligations.

Now Dave, did you have to install some ESU bypass to do that? I'm hearing from MSFN that the updates are being rolled back. On Windows 8, I am able to just install Server 2012 update, just after downloading. Are you not able to do just the same on Windows 8.1?
Yes. I had to install the ESU Bypass.

Well, I’ll count myself lucky. On Windows 8, I likely won’t have to consider such action until October, but with state of supported browsers, I’ll move off the OS once Firefox ESR support is taken away.

Edit: We now have some clarification on this.
Turns out that Dave 67 here is the same fellow I was back and forth with at MSFN, and explains this:

Yes. One person on the mydigitalife forums ran into the problem of the PC rolling back the server 2012 r2 updates after trying to install it so the blue bypass was created.
I kinda wished you had said something before now, about the mydigitalife forums. I was posting responses on two forums with you, and that was the first I’d heard of it. Oh well. I’m going to paste this over a eight forums, so others can see it too.

So did you attempt installing the Server 2012 R2 update onto your Windows 8.1 installation? I’m curious to see how it went. 😁
Hi Jody!
I installed the ESU for Windows 8.1 and then recently tried to install the latest 2023-02 Security Update Only for Server 2012 R2 x64 but I got the message it's impossible to apply the update message.

Yes. I had to install the ESU Bypass.
Which ESU? The one for Windows 8.1 or... server 2012 R2?
The above procedure in Windows 8.1 did not work for me, unfortunately.

The one that's listed prominently on the Mydigitallife forums in the Windows 8 section. Did you follow the instructions listed in the file?
