Windows 8.1 refuses to sleep

Mine was having the problems with sleeping, and Acer fixed it. I don't know what they did, but they fixed it. It did have trouble sleeping the other day, but I did that override request and that fixed it.

i have finally gave up because i think there is something wrong with my MS account.

I've never considered this could be something on the MS server side of the MS account... Interesting theory - that could explain why some can sleep while using a MS account while others can't. Makes me want to open a new MS account just to test out the theory. I can say my MS account is VERY old, based off a Hotmail address I started when Hotmail was a new thing. Perhaps this occurs with old Hotmail addresses which were converted over when MS took over? Or Hotmail addresses which are changed after the account is switched over to the new outlook.com format? Something like that? Hmm... New idea, never brought up in this thread before.

Only thing, though. If the problem were with a MS account on the MS server side, it would have to be a problem which only affects Win8.1, not Win8 or Win10b... Sleep worked fine on Win8 for me and others in this thread, but not Win8.1. And people are reporting the issue no longer exists on Win10b. (I have the same results others are reporting on my Win10b install in VMware Workstation as well.)

That said, I've created a new MS account for testing purposes and have logged into my Win8.1 PC with it - will report back in a day or two with the results of my testing.

Gork, I also have a very old Hotmail account (not as old as yours, though) and my HP 500-056 sleeps reliably, although when it was first upgraded to Windows 8.1, it did not sleep. I believe it started to sleep reliably with the December 2013 Windows Update.

So, unless Microsoft is picking and choosing which accounts will sleep and which will not, I don't think that theory will work for me.

Hey guys, I'm having a bit of an issue trying to override a process request.

I found out that my computer isn't sleeping due to the mbam.exe process (Malwarebytes) under SYSTEM.

The problem is that when I try to override it and since the complete path presented after performing the "powercfg -requests" command is "\Device\HardddiskVolume5\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbam.exe" when I perform the "powercf -requestsoverride PROCESS \Device\HardddiskVolume5\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbam.exe SYSTEM" command it only adds to the override this portion of the path: "\Device\HardddiskVolume5\Program SYSTEM". How can I fix this?

Hey guys, I'm having a bit of an issue trying to override a process request.

I found out that my computer isn't sleeping due to the mbam.exe process (Malwarebytes) under SYSTEM.

I also had a request from MBAM which was interfering with sleep. I'm pretty sure it was also mbam.exe.

I realized it was because MBAM was running a scan when the computer was trying to sleep. And actually in my case it was running scans often because I had my automated schedule set incorrect. Do you have it set to run an automated scan(s)?

Now I have it set to run a scan once a day and yes, the computer will not sleep if a scan is running, but once the scan has completed that process will no longer interfere with sleep.

Sorry that doesn't exactly answer your question but maybe if you fiddle around with scan settings MBAM may not interfere with sleep.

Sleep works fine with a local account. I really liked the sync but I can live without it. I really don't get why they never fixed it. So many complaints all over the Web.

Interesting that mbam.exe is interfering. As I mentioned I only saw that process preventing sleep when MBAM was running scans. I'll have to check next time a scan runs to see if that process is listed. But either way I did not have to set an override for it since once the scan is finished my computer sleeps. The program itself is definitely not preventing sleep.

Just an update from my previous posts...

Currently my laptop sleeps at the default 30 min, which didn't in the past and anything over 1 hr is inconsistent. I'm not sure if auto maintenance kinda runs a troubleshooter when laptop is idle as hibernate was set to never is now back to 180 min...

My screen dims to about 15% when I adjust the sleep timer, why does it do that? More an irritation than anything else. So I'm not 100% sure what fixes it then breaks it again...

I am also having a problem with getting the computer to sleep. My situation may be different (I admit I haven't read all 200 pages). I use my PC for Windows Media Center and record shows onto it. I have 2 Xboxes that act as extenders to allow TVs to watch live or recorded TV. I want to sleep the computer when not in use, wake when recording, then sleep after when not in use. I cannot get it to sleep at all. When I press sleep, it cuts the video feed for the monitor, but it comes back on about 5 seconds later (computer never sleeping).

I ran an energy report, but I'm not sure what any of it means. Can someone take a look and maybe get a hint as to what my problem is?

Nah, can't do that, Orbital . . . this HP desktop has 8.1 on it and is my main machine, so it has to stay the way it is for now.

Once Win10 is released may be another thing, though.
