Windows 8.1 refuses to sleep

I think I have a solution.

I disabled iPV6 and its doing things properly.



Will this cause me many issues?

Do you actually HAVE IPv6 service with your ISP? Like I said a while back, it may be a virus, at attack through the IPv6 protocol. I would turn it back on, and do a NETSTAT on it, see what processes are trying to use IPv6. You can tell by the real long numbers.

Try Netstat /abn and /abo

I get what you are saying.But can find nothing on the drive and it was a fresh format. ( never say never though ). So I will do it again and run the NETSTAT and see if its getting used when it shouldn't be.

I have been following this thread as well as others regarding windows 8/8.1 sleep issues. My PC hasn't entered sleep on its own since I installed Win 8.1. I think I have tried everything here and elsewhere to fix it with no results. I tried disabling IPV6 as suggested by VooDoo and its sleeping again as it should. Good fix for now, thanks.

No Viruses/Malware/Rootkits etc. Same results as I had the first time - and I used some different tools too this time.

No problems that I can see as yet. IPV6 box is checked in a windows 7 laptop I'm using as well as a windows 8 laptop I am using with no sleep problems. I suspect that it is bug in the 8.1 preview.
How did you determine that IPV6 was the culprit?

It may not be a virus PER SE - It may be some process, internal or external, trying to connect to your system via IPv6. Or, there may just be something with that protocol that keeps a system alive all the time. I have the protocol installed, but I use Cox Cable, and tere is NO IPv6 Protocol, it';s all IPv4.

Ah - yes I agree. I have had a very long hard look and cannot find anything but will run the NETSTAT /abn /abo and what it throws up.

I too struggled to find an answer as to why my Win 8.1 would not sleep... thanks to you, I disabled my IPv6 protocol and discovered immediate success. I'll cross my fingers that this was the answer I was searching for

Hello all. I've struggle with sleep problems with Windows 8.1. I tried many of the things here including disable IV6 which I thought actually worked but in the long run didn't. I'm no expert but I discovered what worked for me. The first step was, as mentioned in this thread, realizing that disconnecting my Ethernet cable from my PC let my PC sleep manually (via the desktop) or automatically (just waiting based on the time settings in power options). That made me focus on some kind of network activity was keeping it up. So here's what I did. I removed myself from or killed the one Homegroup (not workgroup) originating from my PC. Immediately my PC slept manually and automatically. I did one other thing too while I was at it. I removed all the other PCs listed as Media Devices ( I think that was the term) under "This PC". I even went back, enabled IV6 and returned all other settings I had played with (Change advanced power settings) to default and all is still well.

In Windows 8.1, "This PC" is found in Windows Explorer. I believe it's the new name for "My Computer". You'll also see Favorites, Skydrive, Homegroup, & Network there.

I followed your advice and it worked for a while and returned to not sleeping. I had same the result when I disabled IPV6. My PC does automatically sleep when I disconnect the Ethernet cable. SO you helped me determine that the ethernet card is the problem. I upgraded the driver for the card and have also checked and unchecked the boxes in power resources tab in the the device manager with no results. Any other thoughts?

Disabled IPv6 on my Thinkpad Twist, fixed my sleep problems right away. I will post any issues that may arise as a result..

Sleep works for me only when IPv6 is disabled and I set airplane mode to On before I close the lid or walk away. However, whenever I wake it up from Sleep, my bluetooth device wigs out and it reports that the driver for my display is missing...

Cripes. Win8.1 Pro RTM has an now important Advanced Power Setting. It is Multimedia settings- When sharing Media. Change it to Allow the Computer to Sleep
Finally my computer will happily sleep when I am connected to the Homegroup (note that none of the other computers have to be running to hang sleep). Now to try to undo all the other changes I made...

NOTE: I had to also leave IPv6 DISABLED for the computer to sleep. No access to internet anyways...

Sooo, I found out about IPv6 and sleeping in Win8.1 RTM. You can either have IPv6 enabled or HOMEGROUP enabled but not both to have sleep work. Take your pick. I cannot get Homegroup to work without having IPv6 (I keep getting asked for credentials) so the choice is easy, leave Homegroup.
I can either move files around on the public access or I will try remote desktop access. I am still working on this, heh.

EDIT 2013-12-28 This did not fix the problem. For me, a MS update on Dec 11th fixed it.
