Windows 8.1 Problems. 'Windows has ran out of memory'

Hi. I have recently upgraded my windows 8 laptop to windows 8.1. It has 4gb of memory. Before i upgraded, my computer worked great. Now, every once in a while, my computer displays an error message that says something like: 'Windows is running out of memory. To fix this, close and restart open programs'. Closing programs does not work, and my programs crash until I restart my computer. If I go to task manager, Windows Problem Reporting is open many times. I ran malwarebytes, and nothing came up. Is there a way to fix except for downgrading again?

Hello SkyKnifer, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Did you by chance disable your page file, or set it to a low size?

If so, it would be recommended to set the page file to be managed by the system instead.
If not, then is your hard drive running low on free space. If so, then you will need to free up space or get, get a larger hard drive, or move the page file to a hard drive that has more space.

Hope this helps for now, :)
Shawn

No, I did not change my page file. I do not have a too full hard drive. There is 358 of 442 GB available. How much should I set my initial and maximum virtual memory to be?

Leaving your page file set to be managed by the system is fine.

Have you noticed if this only happens with any specific program or action?

If it's for a specific program, then you may have a memory leak with the program. You could use Resource Monitor to monitor the "Memory" tab to see if a specific process may be using up unusually high amount of memory when this happens.

OK.

Try these 2 things.
You can always undo them.
After doing them reboot & look at your Task Manager again.

It did not help with the disk usage. :(

Someone else will have to help with that issue.

You have good CPU usage.

SkyKnifer,

Scroll down in Task Manager to see what it's showing as using up the Disk so much, and compare that to what's using up Memory as well.

So far, I'm seeing a lot of Google Chrome windows or tabs open. You might check to see if you have any toolbars or add-ons installed in Chrome that may be causing a memory leak by temporarily disabling them to see if this issue continues afterwards.

A process called 'System' is using up the disk.
A process called 'Service Host: Local System' and Google Chrome is using up the Memory.

I have a brand new HP Compac QC58 that came with preinstalled windows 8. I initially wanted windows 7 but none were available. Then I decided to take the plunge and "Update" to windows 8.1. Ever since then my laptop has behaved so badly that I want to throw it out the window. Everything misbehaves. From the keyboard all the way to desktop. Search is TOTALLY useless. I cannot move desktop icons unless I reboot. Boot times are worse than the horrendous win 7 boot times. Keyboard and touch pad have a mind of their own.

My advise is; if you have not updated to windows 8.1 DON'T do it as you may regret it! Sure some people have had no problems but this is little consolation.

PS: in order to make windows 8 functional I had to install third party classic shell and searcheverything. I am sick and tired of the problems I am experiencing with this update. And I thought windows 8 was bad! Windows 8.1 is HORRID!:cry:

You might also troubleshoot with a clean startup to see if it may be able to help ID a culprit. It may take a bit of time to test doing this to see if you get the error or not while testing.

Yup. I disabled all unused tool bars and extensions. So far, the clean boot is working well. I will try to find out what is wrong. Here is a screenshot of the task manger after I ran clean boot: Task manager 5.png Now, I just need to determine the problem.
