Windows 8.1 Preview Not Working on All Computers

Microsoft yesterday released the new Windows 8.1 Preview and even if the update is available as a free download for all Windows 8 users, not everybody can install it.

For some reason, a number of Windows 8 consumers cannot deploy Windows 8.1 Preview, even though the update shows up in the Store after deploying the original patch.

We’ve contacted Microsoft for more information on this and it appears that it’s all because of different language packs, so the company recommends users to wait until an official fix is released and only then deploy Windows 8.1 Preview.

“The base language of your OS (the language chosen during setup) is outside one of the 13 supported languages for Windows 8.1 Preview. Please note that any other language or non-specified version (such as English (United Kingdom) and Portuguese (Portugal)) are not included among the supported languages,” Microsoft explains.

I don't seem to have any trouble with it

Just install the US version and select UK keyboard / input and continue

cheers

OK, so maybe I am a stupid American, but it wouldn't seem all that difficult for me to use a UK English version of windows. Maybe I should try it?

Brummyfan link worked for me (installing Windows 8.1)

Thanks very much for your link to my question.

I followed the instructions provided in options two and now I am happily using Windows 8.1 preview.

I find 8.1 very easy to use, bulk apps downloads via the apps page works a treat.

Once again to all those who offered their assistance .:D

There's nothing new about, or wrong with, using workarounds.

I've been using them since 3.1 to get around things I don't like, or to get added functionality.

Same with 3rd-party add-ons.

I can't understand why it's suddenly such a big deal now with Win 8/8.1

I am praying my tech can fix my Windows 7 version...because the computer I bought with
Windows 8 I am returning tomorrow. 8 might be fine for a pad and those who play games,
listen to music, etc., etc. but if you want to WORK with it, forget it.
Again, praying my old computer w/version 7 (XP was my favorite by far) is salvageable.

You are right!

I have put my "WORK" programs on my desktop.

Mail, Word, IE & other Office programs.

Otherwise I have to fight all the "Features" that are not applicable to my work.

When I get done with my "WORK", then the Win8 "Charms" are fine for other things.

Don't go back to Win7. Play their silly games until they sort things out.

I'm on my third day with 8 and dislike it more all of the time.
Not that I'm a pro, but having worked with '95 and owned '98,
XP, 7 ... this is strictly for touch pads and not a serious work
edition of anything. CONSTANTLY adverts/popups. And the
really stupid sort that are jiggling around. (I get migraines
from those). 8 would waste more of my time trying to navigate
around clicking for what I want, and then right under that I've
inadvertently clicked something I do NOT want.

When you load the OS the first thing i do is go into the start ( well few other customising first) and on 8.1 click the down arrow, and the list of all the current Apps appears - right click the mouse down in the bottom area of the page, and then select customise, then you can stay on the same page, and send the shortcuts i need at that stage to the taskbar, or the start menu, easy, and then add to the taskbar as I progress installing apps till i fill the taskbar up, as i'm a jump list lover. Then I sort out the shortcuts in start into categories and name them when i have some spare time.

Thank you, but my cut-to-the-chase will be to go BACK to Windows 7 or XP (preferably the latter if it were possible) with a repaired
version of my old computer. OR, a used one with my old hard drive.
Otherwise, will resort to lessons to run Linux or Mac. I have better things to do than constantly deal with Bill Gate's idealistic ways to
change things, outdate things, and make money (he really needs it??) from 8's bombardment of ads.

Goodmorning Tantoes,

I hear you and feel your pain after you get all your hardware back up to tip top shape please go install your Windows 7 Ultimate and your Office 2010 Pro and a good Antivirus and you will be good for the next 10 years or so, and keep an eye open for windows 9 and windows 10 starting in 2014 for Windows 9 it will come in 3 different installers 1 for Desktops and Laptops with the real windows start and everything you enjoyed in windows 7 windows 9 with have... 1 for tablets ( I don't care about tablets ) and 1 for Smartphones ( again I don't care for Smartphones )

I hope I settled your stress a little and I hope you have a wonderful weekend, yes there is positive and better news ahead for all of us in the near future...

Microsoft is and will be writing Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 or Blue off their books around year end, and file Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 Blue next to the Windows Vista file folder in Microsoft failed projects and tasks data base.

Regards,
Explorertml

Hi Tantoes,

I think that's all ready been taking care of, lets just say there has been 600 folks fired this past week alone from Windows Design section and a lot more coming down the pipe and also their is lots of people getting axed by the ax man in Support all this stuff and folks being fired from within Microsoft will be coming out later this week in the Media keep your eyes open...

Lots of head rolling is taking place, within the Microsoft Corp, at this time and it will be going on for the rest of the year... and lots of 180 change

FYI been told Mr Gates is starting to walk the halls again and he is not a very happy camper these days...

Lets wait and see to what happens to Mr Ballmer in the next few months? ;)

Have A Good One Tantoes

Hate to hear of jobs lost, but hate more when it's a near monopoly we are forced to purchase from.
Too much change, much too fast.
OH...and had to try the link to your reply in email (the only form of it I can get to work here)
after repeated attempts and system not working error messages.
