Windows 8.1 preview ISO's to be released by Microsoft

In a message on the MyDigitalLife forums, Neowin forum member FaiKee has posted what he says are extracts from an official Windows 8.1 Preview Q&A that will go live on Microsoft's website on June 26. The Q&A states the Windows 8.1 Preview will also be available for download as an ISO file in addition to the Windows Store direct update.

Several 8.1 threads so not sure where this belongs but I am extremely disappointed in MS.

I had the option for the $19.99 upgrade (I think that was the price) because I had purchased a Win 7 laptop shortly before Win 8 was released. Based on reviews and my research I decided I didn't want the OS as I didn't have a touchscreen computer so I didn't really see a lot of benefit. So now barely six months later they release 8.1 which seems to have resolved most of the issues non touch screen users had. But I can't get it without paying full price. MS should have some sort of discount available but of course they want. Yes I know it is my fault but still I am disappointed (and I am a MSFT shareholder too).
Isn't copy and paste a great feature, it allows you to post the same respond in more then one thread. . .

I sometimes do that, Lee, if the comment is relevant in a number of topics, or even cross-forum between here and SevenForums.

Saves me typing the same thing twice.

But I always indicate, in the first line of my post, that this is the case. :)

Just curious but do you guys have a watermark (lower right corner) showing from having the preview installed?

Thanks

I updated from the store and had the water mark last night, but today it is gone. I think the water mark goes away after it activates.

Jim

I think your copy of windows was already activated. that's the reason it might have vanished.

Well that's strange cause mine is definitely activated, and still, the watermark is showing....

Win 8 activated.PNG

Win 8 watermark.PNG

No sleep lost, but your reply is a bit confusing.

Has anyone had problems during the update? Specifically when using the .iso?
The reason I ask is because the update BSODs for me during the final stage of "setting up devices".

I installed from the .iso to a separate SSD. So have a dual boot set-up with W8. All went well with the install. A couple of things since - I installed the Office 365 Home trial and set up Outlook for my email. Interesting that the Office 365 files are hidden (even when show hidden files is checked in Folder Options.)
[They can be accessed from C:\Program Data\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Office 2013 right click on a shortcut and select properties/Open File Location.]
All went OK except my Bigpond email account which fails when testing sending the test message - it logs onto the incoming (POP3) mail server OK, but fails the test message with "The connection to the server was interrupted." Bigpond is my ISP. All settings are the same as in my other computers, which connect successfully (but they are running Office 2013 Pro, not Office 365.) My Gmail and Hotmail accounts connect OK.

The other issue, my AV, Vipre, triggered SinaUpdateCenter as a risk but failed when trying to clean it. Vipre attempts to delete "dabapi.dll" A Google search indicates that this file is associated with SinaUpdateCenter and recommends deletion. A manual deletion fails also, it is a protected entry. The TakeOwnership tweak works in W8.1, I was able to rename the two instances of "dabapi.dll" A Vipre scan after the rename doesn't find SinaUpdateCenter.

Edit. While I didn't think that the email problem was due to using Office 365 I decided to uninstall it and install the trial version of Office 2013 Pro. That didn't work out, Office 2013 refused to install. So I tried going back to a restore point. Office 2013 still refused to install. Next move was to do a full Reset of W8.1. After doing that, Office 2013 has installed OK, but Outlook still has the same issue. ?? A W8.1 bug ??

I tried installing from iso over my UK windows 8, BSOD. I was thinking of a clean install, but have got my Windows 8 running how I want it. I installed finally on a VM and it works fine , going to play around and see what its about. First impressions are favourable

I have mine installed in VMWare Workstation, and running fine. The Stardock programs (Decor and ModernMix) do not work in 8.1 (figured they wouldn't). Haven't attempt to install windowblinds. More later. . .:D
