I'm not sure as your hard drive at the moment is read only.
You could try to create a backup using macrium reflect and save the backup on a connected device that is large enough.

Could I transfer it to a second hard drive?

Also when I checked my hard drives attributes it said that the read only was on no?

Yes, as long as it is connected and you specify to save it on the second hard drive.
Or you have another pc/laptop to tranfser.

You could, but I wouldn't do that.
If there indeed is a virus, it could have damaged a lot, also it could have removed those partitions (depending on what kind of virus).
The reset function is not always functioning correct, like the resetting process is stuck at some point or didn't do the job right.
Also, it could be possible that the reset won't work when a hard drive is not fully accessible.

I would do an installation via a disk or USB.

Possibly, if you have the right options. (Could have mentioned before, but not all the recovery options are always available speaking from experience)

When I try to install Windows 8 it comes up with couldn't format selected partition. error 0x80070057!

That error could indicate that the hard drive is failing.

Turns out it's not my hard drive because the same thing happens when I replace it with a different hard drive and the samething happens

I can't because of and error of windows not being able to format the drive

It says:
We couldn't format the selected partition. [Error: 0x80070057]
