Windows 8.1 High DPCLatency,(annoying popping sound)-Help.

Hello everybody.
Before I start I just wanted to say , sorry for the bad english .
So , I have read allot of forums lately , and I found out that windows 8 and windows 8.1 weakness is its latency.
For me this proplem accoured like 2 months ago (before it didn't happend) , and yes I have messed around with the bios before that happend (now its all set to default )
Currently I am running Windows 8.1 Update 1 (made a clean install yesterday) latest updates and drivers installed (with a program called DriverEasy) , and I am also running all the default settings in bios currently . I noticed the problem , 2 months ago just like I said before , when I was watching a video on youtube . Since that , I just can't watch some videos anymore with the ANNOYING static/crackling sound , its very annoying .And it also seems that it affects CPU performance and fps drops:mad:.Like I said before , I installed Windows 8.1 yesterday , so no minor tweaks have been done to the system .

I have already tried :

-"disabledynamictick" command
-Disabling all unused devices in bios
-Disabling EIST and C1E (no improvment at all)
*-Disabling HPET Mode reduces latency , but pc isn't stable.

Here are my computer specs (its a 4 year old and its really , really bad ):

Gigabyte G41MT-S2PT(motherboard)
-Intel Celeron E3400(processor)
-Intel G41 Express Chipset(intergrated graphics card - really bad)
-4Gb 1333Mhz Kingston DDR3 Memory(ram)
-Windows 8.1 Update 1 (latest drivers and updates installed)

Here are the screenshots of DPC Latency Checker and Latencymon :

DPC Latency Checker (2minutes):

DPClATENCY.png
There are one or two yellow once a while .The values also slightly raise to yellows when I move the mouse , which I think is normal .

Latencymon (2minutes-both pitcures):

latencymonregasdg.png
The values were
raising and falling

LatencyMonDriverPage.png
The values were
raising until I stopped
the checking .

My power plan is set at High Performance (when the powerplan was set to Basic , I was getting red spikes in DPC Latency Checker) , and I am running the stock voltage in bios for the cpu 1.28750V.

I realize this might be a hardware related problem , but I am little bit more sure that this is a Windows 8.1 problem hopefully they will fix it in the Update 2 .

Help would really be appreciated.

Every reply would be helpfull...:)

-scarface0004

P.S.Sorry for the bad english.

EDIT:Today I noticed that the sound popped , when I started my computer at the windows logo.

Windows 8 Compatibility: The DPC latency utility runs on Windows 8 but does not show correct values. The output suggests that the Windows 8 kernel performs badly and introduces a constant latency of one millisecond, which is not the case in practice. DPCs in the Windows 8 kernel behave identical to Windows 7. The utility produces incorrect results because the implementation of kernel timers has changed in Windows 8, which causes a side effect with the measuring algorithm used by the utility. Thesycon is working on a new version of the DPC latency utility and will make it available on this site as soon as it is finished.

Beside that it's most likely a hardware / driver / codec - issue.

Your system is also not really powerful as well.

Windows 8 / 8.1 are not causing that kind of issues. There is only an input-lag, which can be fixed via M$-tool, when playing older games without direct-/raw-mouse-input.

Thanks for the reply!
Like I mentioned before , this problem accoured like 2 months ago when I was watching a youtube video . Then I was also running Windows 8.1 and before then I didn't noticed the problem .It was running smooth , nice and dandy with no issues and no latency problem. Anyway as you can see from the 3rd picture , the problem is causing (I think so) "afd.sys". Is there anyway I can atleast reduce it , because the audio problem is really , REALLY annoying . I am sure that I am not the only one that is having this problem . I hope thats a Windows problem and it will be fixed in update 2 . Thanks anyway. Is there like a way to atleast decrease the latency?

I enabled HPET in bios (because of performance issues) . Now the bars are yellow and the latency has increased. I have enabled it back , because of system instabillity.

I have here beside my high-end-rig's an emergency Dell, which is based on really low spec's around a Q8200 and I just checked today my bosses cheap Office-Dell, which is newer then mine, but we bought it for AU$549,- around 8 month ago, because his really really old XP-Box finally died beyond to be able to be repaired, without spending even more money on it and as mentioned before, your problem is on all computers non-existent, therefore I believe that the problem should / must be related to your hardware / software-(combo). I even double-checked another cheap HP-Office-PC at work (AU$399,-) and again the problem didn't exist.

Did you check your log-files via Event-Viewer ?

Maybe we can pin-point something there.

Another option would be to check your hardware via one of the following Tools-CD's/DVD's:

- Hiren's BootCD
- Ultimate Boot CD
- MTDVD (my Upload) => Info: Click

Just check step-by-step your hardware like:

- Memory
- Graphic's-Card
- Hard-Drive's
- CPU
- etc.pp.

Just post any findings and we can have a further look into it.

EDIT:

Also have a read here about HPET: Click

I had 680's in SLI and now 780-Ti's in SLI and have no stutter- / lag-issues when gaming and I play BF4, as mentioned in that thread, as well. My wife's 2600k + GTX570-OC has no issues when gaming as well.

Maybe it's Motherboard / Chipset / BIOS-related ? As you could read, there is no clear outcome in their test / findings.

:)

Thank you Tonshuh!
I found out that I had some corrupted files on windows. I ran these commands:
-sfc /scannow(found the corrupted files and fixed them)
-Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth(It also fixed some things)
Then I had to restart my computer.
-I finally ran sfc /scannow again , and it didn't found anything , so I guess it fixed some files, but the latency is the same...

Thanks for the programs will try them out , and report back.
Oh, and can you please tell me how and what should I look at Event-Viewer?

Thank you again.

Good to hear that you found something and could fix-it. That's a start.

Look out for things like this ones here:

juNyZi.jpg

You can google for the Event ID numbers, like "Event ID 50" etc. and then you will find some descriptions about it.

Not every Warning / Error is something severe or a bad thing, like my 50's and 55's are related to my Drive "L:", which is my Sony MP-3-Player, which I charge via USB and which is not fully compatible with Windows-8.1, but that is not an issue for me.

Another thing you could look at, would be packet-loss in your I-Net-Connection, via tracert or ping test's.

Forgot to ask you before , do you have HPET on in bios?
And btw my friend also has a windows 8 installed on his machine and he said that he also has noticed the sound crackling/popping here and then . But then my other friend has Windows 8.1 and he said he didn't noticed it yet.

P.S. Have you set a password for the .rar file you uploaded to mega upload ? If so could you please send me the password of the .rar file on personal messege?

Oh and Event Viewer has shown 2 errors (before the cleanup I mention before) . I think they are both Internet related :
-The server {1B1F472E-3221-4826-97DB-2C2324D389AE} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout. EVENT ID :10010
-The server {BF6C1E47-86EC-4194-9CE5-13C15DCB2001} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout. EVENT ID : 10010
But like I said those showed up before the cleaning I did using CMD .

No Password for MTDVD, but it's packed with WinRAR 5.

HPET is in my Device-Manager and when I check it with "bcdedit /deletevalue useplatformclock" via elevated cmd, then I get no error, so yes it's activated and in use.

You could maybe try the K-Lite-Codec-Pack, which I use / install an all Windows-Systems, no matter if with WMC or not.

I install such basics the easy way via Ninite.

For actual drivers I go to Necacom.

You could download a Youtube-Video via tools like Youtube-Downloader etc. and have a look if you still have the issue, if you play the video locally without streaming it.

Is there something similar in the hardware or even equal with your friends computer, which has the issue as well ?

PS:

Will have to go to bed now, as I have unfortunately to get-up early for work, but will be back tomorrow.

:)

you can't use dpc latency checker on windows 8 since it doesn't work right; it will show insane values for everyone. Stick only with latencymon and having said that your latency is not bad.

zahl trust me it is from personal experiences. The crackling/popping audio is so freaking annoying. I mean it doesn't pop like every second , but it does like ever 2 or 5minutes , which can get really annoying . Hopefully Microsoft will have a fix for that in the Update 2...

MEASURED INTERRUPT TO USER PROCESS LATENCIES
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The interrupt to process latency reflects the measured interval that a usermode process needed to respond to a hardware request from the moment the interrupt service routine started execution. This includes the scheduling and execution of a DPC routine, the signaling of an event and the waking up of a usermode thread from an idle wait state in response to that event.

Highest measured interrupt to process latency (µs): 19809,177108
Average measured interrupt to process latency (µs): 4,356543

Highest measured interrupt to DPC latency (µs): 78,176976
Average measured interrupt to DPC latency (µs): 1,375999

MEASURED SMI, IPI AND CPU STALLS
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The SMI, IPI and CPU stalls value represents the highest measured interval that a CPU did not respond while having its maskable interrupts disabled.

Highest measured SMI or CPU stall (µs) 6,317331

REPORTED HARD PAGEFAULTS
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Hard pagefaults are events that get triggered by making use of virtual memory that is not resident in RAM but backed by a memory mapped file on disk. The process of resolving the hard pagefault requires reading in the memory from disk while the process is interrupted and blocked from execution.

Process with highest pagefault count: chrome.exe

Total number of hard pagefaults 1
Hard pagefault count of hardest hit process: 1
Highest hard pagefault resolution time (µs): 9,897841
Total time spent in hard pagefaults (%): 0,000004
Number of processes hit: 1

So no its not normal , on the Main tab , it was all stable maximum 256 and then it just jumped 19809 and then back to some low values like 33. Tips are welcome!

Have you tried running hpet in 64bit mode or disabled? why 32bit with a x64 os.

Also try going into windows power options and disable "usb selective suspend setting"

Ok , so windows boot like in 20sec before it did in 29. Have run Latency Mon for 8minutes , and have not seen a spike . The maxium was 886 , I am guessing that is because I launched LatencyMon at startup... Although I noticed the the DPC was unstable. It wen't from 12 to 123 or something . Will see how it performs in everyday use , but I have seen the lowest values with HPET OFF.
