My Dell Insperion 15 now has this boot error. I tried using the recovery USB from my HP. It is smart enough to know that I'm not trying to reboot the HP computer so it doesn't work. This is so frustrating. What to do?

Check HDD with this: Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp.
Test your RAM: RAM - Test with Memtest86+ - Windows 7 Help Forums
one stick at a time eight passes per stick

Drive letters in WinPe will probably be different from what you see in windows - that is normal.

I would delete the bcd store and run the commands again. You should be pointing them at the reserved system partition .

Otherwise, at cmd prompt, type:

diskpart

lis vol

( Look to see the drive letter for your main windows partition - if it is D then type as below, otherwise replace D with the letter diskpart gives for the main windows partition)

sel vol d

act

exi

bcdboot d:\windows /s d:

bootsect /nt60 all /mbr

restart the pc - you're good.

Hey thanks,
But I have no idea what any of that means or how to perform those steps. I am a layperson at best.

Try the links first. You have pictured tutorials that are very easy to follow. If that fails, we shall get into more complex operations.

...still lost. I down loaded 3 of the diagnostic tools to my thumb drive (seperate occurrances). The Dell still just boots to the blue screen.

Burn it onto a blank disc using Windows Image Burner and set your Boot Device Priority in BIOS to boot from CD.

F12....boot options then I choose legacy boot and then CD/DVD...enter.
Now black screen-"No boot device found."

I noticed when I run the diagnostic tool, all items have a green check mark, except the hard drive. It has a x inside a red dot.
An error msg now shows:
Error code 2000-0142
validation 125531
Msg: hard drive 0-S/N S0V2Q1BT, short self test unsuccessful
