Windows 8.1 Disk Usage 100%

After a system restore on my laptop, the Disk Usage has been stuck at 100%. I've browsed the internet and tried every-which solution to no avail. Would anyone happen to know a way of fixing this without solutions like "disable BITS" or "check the Resource Manager" - I've never had to deal with the resource manager and find it somewhat intimidating to say the least.

First go to Disk Clean up right click and run as Administrator and when it's done place a check next to everything and clean your system (it can take quite a while). Then go to Defragment and Optimize Drives and defragment everything... shut down(not restart) and reboot 3 times This cleans and organizes your disk. The 3 reboots lets windows put all programs and start files to the beginning of your C: drive on the outside of your disk.

Thank you for the help, Cliff, but I'm not sure if it will get the job done; not because I doubt you, but instead because I got an error, and when troubleshooting, found I needed to open Command Prompt (admin) and run sfc/scannow to fix the issue. But... ANOTHER issue rose up - not only is the scan taking a long time, but it froze twice. Once at 39%, and another at 47% (restarted the system after the first freeze)

Would there happen to be any other ways that you could recommend to help?

Try this general "Fix All" in the Admin command prompt(it takes quite a while to finish):

Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup&sfc/scannow&Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth&sfc/scannow


It cleans up and restore the WinSxS (Windows Side by Side) folders containing multiple copies of dll‘s in order to let multiple applications run in Windows without any compatibility problem.

Error 87 means spaces in the code were forgotten/missing. Did you cut & paste it into the command prompt, because I just tried it to check and it starts without error.

Don't worry that happens to me too when I'm reading code, that's why I use cut and paste. It has to do with the letter spacing so each line of text is about the same length. In LibreOffice one can change how characters are spaced.

I've never had to deal with the resource manager and find it somewhat intimidating to say the least.
If you start Task Manager and sort processes by Disk activity, it should tell, which one is responsible.

Try to temporarily disable your network adapter, I guess you are using wireless, see if it solves it.

You could be misinterpreting the 'freezes'.

Many processes DISM, scannow, disk clean-up etc.) have points where they seem to freeze but actually they are dealing with something and you just need to be patient (sometimes very patient) and resist the urge to reboot. Often they sit at this point for what seems forever, then you turn around for a few seconds and suddenly find they've finished (0-11% in 2 hours; 11-100% in 30 seconds would not be unusual).

I did a disk clean-up a couple of weeks ago that took twice as long as usual, and sat at one point for a couple of hours or more, but it got there in the end.

Once any process completes it's worth looking in the log to see if there were any errors and get the details. You may not understand them (I don't :D ) but you can post the detail here and there will be someone able to guide you further.

Okay, update:

I wanted to do more troubleshooting, so, after a restart, I opened up the task manager, and found Google Chrome was using the most disk now (it wasn't even open). After ending the process, the Toshiba Service Center filled it's spot. After ending THAT, it all began decelerating back to 5% disk...

In Chrome settings, under "Show advanced settings", at the very bottom you can turn off "Continue Running Background Apps". For the Toshiba Service Center I don't know, on my Lenovo the Solution Center can be set to what I want for alerts, and turn off "send anonymous usage statistics" to control reads/writes to disk.
