Windows 8.1 communications apps keep crashing

This is a very common issue, according to Google.

Every few days, the Reliability Monitor tells me that microsoft.windowscommunicationsapps... have crashed. There is no prompt and the apps still seem to function normally. It's just frustrating because the error keeps showing up.

I've tried just about every solution that's out there, including re-installing the apps, re-installing some Windows updates, and deleting the store cache in PowerShell. None of these have been effective.

My current solution is to ignore the error, via the following method.

  1. Open the Action Center through the taskbar or the Control Panel
  2. Click "Change Action Center settings" on the left-hand pane
  3. Click "Problem Reporting Settings" at the bottom of the page
  4. Click "Select programs to exclude from reporting"
  5. Click "Add..."
  6. Browse to C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\microsoft.windowscommunicationsapps_17.5.9600.20689_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe
  7. Double-click "livecomm.exe"
  8. Click "OK" and close the page

Even if there's no real solution to this problem, I wanted to share my method for avoiding those annoying and pointless Reliability Monitor errors that make the system itself look unstable.

If anyone has found a better solution, then please share it. Thanks!

Me too. I think its a windows thing. Only problem I can forsee with your solution is that it may not be reported back to MS via action centre, and if a solution is found action centre will not notify you of the fix.

I just spent half an hour researching Interactive Detection Service which according to my perfmon /report stopped abnormally. The solution is to restart the service from the services dialog, which I did to get error 1: incorrect function.

I then spent another half hour researching why it wouldn't start only to find a technet blog that says in Windows 8 its not supposed to be started unless you apply a registry hack.

Once this registry hack is done the service will then tell you about any service that behaves badly or tries to communiicate with you and then proceed to tell you about it every 5 minutes. This may include the app you are referring to.

Needless to say I left the service in the stopped state and didn't 'fix' it.

I just disabled the Automatic Detection Service. It was stopped and set to Auto- Delayed Start. Thanks for the tip!

It's true that disabling notifications for the livecomm.exe errors will result in them not being reported to Microsoft, but is that really an issue?

Most people don't even notice this because they don't check the Reliability Monitor and there are no other symptoms. The issue has been present since the release of Windows 8.1 in October 2013. I doubt it will be fixed now. The best we can do is to find a smart way of ignoring it.

Correction: ignoring the error via the method in the first post is not effective. I stopped getting the Livecomm.exe crash for 11 days. Then, today, I got three of them.
