Over the weekend I experienced problems with my Windows 8.1 after trying to access hidden files and changing security settings for administrator. First all files disappeared then after system restores I found I could only get to a black screen with cursor and error message: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Error!; Explorer.exe. The application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
I have tried various fixes:

  • clean boot i.e. few services running
  • Safe mode
  • uninstalled Nvidia graphics driver
  • sfc and checkdisk before booting
  • uninstalled Windows updates
  • uninstalled all Microsoft Visual C++ updates (5 or 6) then reinstalled Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 x64
  • I am currently trying a chkdsk C: /f /r /x command which may do the trick!

Can anybody suggest anything else?
Thanks in advance.

There is this tool that you can try; you can select the individual fixes to run. One of them is
to reset to default security permissions.

Best way (and safest in my opinion) to view hidden files is to boot a Live Linux dvd and then use their
tools to view the windows partition.
