Windows 8.1 .bat file glitched

If he does, I would use a point from well before this happened - I think he may have said he did a restore, if not, then a restore may be a good solution.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
Not sure if that's going to help since merging the .reg file for the listed .bat option posted below would have reset all of that to default, and 99lool said it made no difference. Not sure how it wouldn't have though, so something else must be going on.

99lool,

Do you have a restore point dated before all this happened available?

Unfortunately no, What I am wondering is if this is a glitch?

I have just completely deleted all my partitions and reinstalled Windows 8 and its still the same so for some reason this must be in Microsofts Cloud system... Is there a way to delete my settings in their cloud?

I don't see how in 57,000.47 blazes that those settings are stored in the cloud? I use the same MS account for 3 different Windows 8 machines, each one has different Prefs for opening certain files, and no conflicts between them all.

I just looked in PC Settings under "Sync your Settings" and I don't see File Associations as being one of the things that can be Synched, unless File Associations are covered in "App Settings" but I don't think they are.

I'm wondering now if this Batch file is properly formatted, can you post a sample of it? Also, was this a completely fresh install or were there any vestiges of the prior OS left over, even in a Windows.Old folder or maybe even in saved files that you copied back over after the install?

I dont understand what you asking? Like post an example of an batch file? Well even just creating a blank .bat will open with notepad.

Do the Batch files open in other machines? I was asking about the specific BAT file you want to use. I don't understand this at all, you should be able to right-click on it and choose "Open" - Do you see "Open With" when you right click, because I don't have "Open With" on mine, just "Open" and "Edit".

With a fresh install, the BAT file should execute immediately unless you choose "Edit"

How about if you used the RUN command to invoke one of them? Try that, choose a BAT file that you knew worked, open RUN and paste the location or browse to a BAT file, then hit "OK" and tell me what happens.

If it opens up the BAT file in Notepad from there, then something else is going on.

Yes, try opening the BAT file in RUN, take a video of what happens.

A new install should not be opening up in Notepad unless you specifically hit "Edit" - You are trying to open with a double-click? I always right-click then choose "Open"

Maybe it is an issue with a shortcut?

But you didn't try to run it through "Run", that's what I want to see.

Do it like this, browse to the file in the Run box, then hit OK:

It would probably work better if you had a real command in there too.

And don't use a blank BAT file, put something like "Open Notepad.exe" in it.

Well, I showed you what is supposed to happen with a Blank File. Run the Blank File through "Run" and see if it gives you the same result. But it would be better to use a real Batch file, that way I can try to chase down what is happening. I know what happens on my machine, I need to see what happens on yours.

Well, I am not quite sure what your asking me to do when you say use RUN to start it, because i do know I have never see the thing that happens to yours. Can you go into detail on how to start a batch file using RUN?

You hit the "Windows Key" and the "X" key at the same time, and choose "Run" from the selections - Then you will get a little Prompt as shown in my images. You can also Right-Click at the very bottom left corner of the screen and that will bring up the same panel where you can choose "Run".

In the Prompt, you can enter the path and name of the BAT file, then click OK or just hit the Enter key and it will force it to start. It is pretty important you do this, because I need to know what happens.

This is what the RUN command box looks like:

runbat.png

Enter your BAT file into that, use a real one, not a blank one.

I am also considering, did you use a Microsoft Account as a Log In to both of these machines, the original machine where this problem started and the "new Install" that you are using now?

Because it is entirely possible that you used "Sync Your Settings" in your PC Settings area (In the Charms Bar), press the "Settings" Gear and open PC Settings, check if you are using a Microsoft Account, see if you are syncing Everything in your Sync Settings, because it is starting to sound like you are using a Microsoft Account, and when you logged into that account on the NEW machine, it simply transferred your File Association Settings to the new machine.

I am actually going to make a new tread about that, because I had not thought File Associations got synced.

So I suggest, name a NEW Microsoft account, and then re-install Windows 8 once again, log in with the NEW account which will not have those settings saved.

That's the best I got for you, but you have to at least try to do the "RUN" command and let me know what it does.

Good, thank you, I see one thing right off the ".Bat":

badbat.png

Remove ALL "" from the command line, try it one more time.

Your CMD file worked fine, so I would suggest, change the BAT file for that Steam Game Mod into a CMD file, it will run for sure. The Structure should be very similar - Change the Extension of the file you are pointing to to "CMD" then just try clicking on it.

If that works, then you should be able to convert any other BAT file to CMD as well.

I am testing my supposition that your Bad File Association was carried over through your Microsoft Account, you never answered, give me ALL the details I ask for please, are you using a Microsoft Account to Log In?

Now that I see what you are doing, I think we can find a solution. See this post here:

[SOLVED] Batch file commands not executed - File Name - Windows 7

When I ask for certain details, I have to have them, otherwise all I can do is sit here and make guesses.

Also read HERE:

Running batch files in windows 8 - Windows 8 - Windows 8

I may have given you some wrong info, the Proper Program to run BAT files is "CMD.exe" which should be in your Windows\System32 folder.

Also, Open PC Settings and go to "Sync your Settings" and Shut it OFF while you try to re-associate the file.

OK, I tested this supposition, that the File Associations gets saved in Sync Settings - So far, they do NOT. So as to why a fresh install of Windows 8 would not open a BAT, it should, or it was not a Fresh Install. Maybe you are installing a Program that takes over the association.

Just change the extension to CMD and it should work for any previous BAT files.

Good, thank you, I see one thing right off the ".Bat":

Okay well unfortunately it still does the same thing when removing the ". Also when I try to change it it says "This file cannot be associated with this file type." or something like that, even with Sync your Settings completely turned off. Also while I can use .cmd for most this this game is actually in Pre-Alpha which would be why its not on the steam store and also im under NDA so I had to cut some parts of the video out, the reason It wont work starting manually is that it need to correctly connect to steam to login on it. Also I am using a Microsoft account, it a hot mail email. I will go take a look at those Links now.
