My Laptop HP Envy 4-1212tu had preinstalled windows8 (windows8 sticker is in the back of the laptop). For some reasons the hard disk was formatted and there is no recovery now. I've installed windows8.1 (downloaded from internet) it doesn't activate.
I followed the tutorial option 1 http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/18309-windows-8-windows-8-1-iso-download-create.html and download the windows8.1 pro using the media creation tool. I've created bootable USB using this iso. When I start installing the windows it prompt for a product key. But it should automatically get the product key from may laptop's BOIS. What should I do now?

Assuming you have the blue sticker, it should not promt for the key... otherwise it could be core, single language or Bing edition...

Run Showkey (option 5) and let me know the first 4 digits of the OEM Product ID (NOT the key) to check the edition of that key.

EDIT: Sorry just realised that version of Showkey does not have the OEM PID .. you will have to use this to enter the key to get the PID.
(I'll work on updating Showkey in the meantime)

Product ID: 00260-

The script shows the OEM key. If I use this product key while installing the windows8.1, shouldn't it work?

Very few windows 8 installs are Pro version - most are Core - Windows 8.1

That is a product ID not a product key..

I would think you need windows 8.1 - not windows 8.1 pro

or you could have a single language version

Looks like a Pro retail key... actually forgot about the leading zeros - what are the following two digits?
You try can this version as well to get pid.

Media creation tool gave me option of downloading win8.1 pro along with win8.1 and some others. How can I be confirmed which version is required for my laptop?

Only if it'd meant for the edition you are installing... .

The script only grabs the current key's PID not the OEM's -
See what pid you get from the version I linked to - I updated this version to show the edition as well.

Downloading this will take much time as my internet speed is bellow 2.5 Mbps. As per my understanding this ISO will not prompt product key? right?

Yup, it will install seamlessly. MS dropped the "Core" name due to there being so many variants of it now, I guess.

PS: For those wondering where the links are, I have cleaned up the app - it's available here.

Windows 8.1 Single language version worked in my laptop. For Windows 10, again I should download Windows 10 Home single language version, right?

I've download single Language version and installed it. windows is not getting activated. Any suggestion?

how did you install it?
If you booted from the windows 10 setup media and did a clean install - windows 10 will not activate..
You must run the setup.exe from within windows 8.1 to perform an upgrade installation - and activate..
Then once your PC has had the activation recorded - you can then clean install windows 10

You MUST upgrade first to get the activation recorded
