Windows 10 Available on July 29

On July 29, you can get Windows 10 for PCs and tablets by taking advantage of the free upgrade offer, or on a new Windows 10 PC from your favorite retailer. If you purchase a new Windows 8.1 device between now and then, the Windows 10 upgrade will be available to you and many retail stores will upgrade your new device for you.

The Windows 10 upgrade is designed to be compatible with your current Windows device and applications. We are hard at work to make this upgrade process a great experience. You can reserve your free Windows 10 upgrade now through a simple reservation process. Look for this icon in your system tray at the bottom of your screen, simply click on the icon, and then complete the reservation process. You can find more details on how this works at Windows.com.

Every good paranoid knows that tin foil alone doesn't work... you need a Faraday Cage outside of it:
Faraday cages cannot block static or slowly varying magnetic fields, such as the Earth's magnetic field (a compass will still work inside). To a large degree, though, they shield the interior from external electromagnetic radiation if the conductor is thick enough and any holes are significantly smaller than the wavelength of the radiation. For example, certain computer forensic test procedures of electronic systems that require an environment free of electromagnetic interference can be carried out within a screened room. These rooms are spaces that are completely enclosed by one or more layers of a fine metal mesh or perforated sheet metal. The metal layers are grounded to dissipate any electric currents generated from external or internal electromagnetic fields, and thus they block a large amount of the electromagnetic interference. See also electromagnetic shielding

Is anyone else having trouble getting the Windows 10 Upgrade app to appear on their PC? The app is Windows Update #KB3035583, and I have it on my machine, but it's not working. I've uninstalled it and reinstalled it several times, have run the WU Diagnostic, have run some fixes from Tweaking.com, have worked with MS Support, etc., and nothing. Support says I have some "corrupted files" that may be causing the problem, but I really don't want to do a clean install NOW, only to have to reinstall everything all over again in 6 weeks. Is this just a problem with my machine, or are there others out there who can't get the upgrade app to appear?

For Windows 8.1 Update

First of all your Windows installation must be Genuine(no pirated versions)
Second if you us a theme patcher(e.g UXStyles), it must be turned off/uninstalled.
Third, make sure you have ALL updates installed.

This is also useful if you have re-imaged and "lost" your reservation.

You can try fixing the files by copy & pasting in an Admin command prompt:

Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup&sfc/scannow&Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth&sfc/scannow&pause
And let it run through then reboot and run it again to check if it cleaned everything.
:note:: only 2 false positives will show up(this is the result of the GWX software as Windows has nothing from the original OS software to compare it to´) and they are(in red):
Summary
This update enables the Diagnostics Tracking Service in Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1), and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. This tracking service collects data about functional issues in Windows.

This update contains the following two manifests that are occasionally updated by the Diagnostic Tracking Service:

  • telemetry.ASM-WindowsDefault.json
  • utc.app.json

The two files are marked as static files in the update. When an advanced user runs the System File Checker Tool (sfc.exe), the files are unintentionally flagged as corrupted. There is no impact or corruption on a device that is running this update, and this issue will be fixed in a later service update.
After this you can type wsreset either in the Run dialog or, which I prefer, in the address bar in file explorer to reset all store apps, then sync your licenses.

Then run windows update again.

Thank you, that fixed my corrupted files like a charm!

Unfortunately, I still can't get the app to run. Before running that tool, I uninstalled the update, then afterward I rebooted and ran WU again, reinstalling the app, but it still didn't do anything. Then I tried running the manual script I found here -- I want to reserve my free copy of Windows 10, but I don -- and that wouldn't work either. It tells me "SUCCESS" at the end, but no app icon shows up. In other words, my machine is "compatible", but it won't run the app. ???

You probably just need to leave it on and on line a while for it to "activate" some people are reporting that theirs just now are showing up.

Got it now!

Hey, since that worked so well, I have to ask... do you have something similar up your sleeve that works on Win 7? I probably have some issues with the secondary machine, too, and I was going to try that tool on it, but it's Win 8 specific. I've done a little research into it, and while DISM will run on Win 7, I don't see anything like the "RestoreHealth" command under that OS.

I use SFC mostly, and the below to fix windows update. Found at the Microsoft community ,that has worked for me before.

Get the System Update Readiness Tool (save it) and right-click on it and "Run as Administrator". Choose the right one for you:

Let it run/fix things.
Reboot.
Try updating.

If it is still failing, attempt this next:
Reset your Windows Update Components with this FixIt:
How do I reset Windows Update components?
Reboot.
Try updating.

If it still fails, try this...

  1. Start an elevated command prompt.
  2. Run the following commands hitting enter after each line:

    net stop wuauserv

    cd %systemroot%

    ren SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

    net start wuauserv

  3. Reboot
  4. Try updating.
**Important** The following issues occur when you do this:

  • Updates that are currently downloaded but that have not yet been installed have to be downloaded again by using Windows Update or Microsoft Update.
  • When you delete the Software Distribution folder, your download history is removed.
  • If you currently receive updates from Microsoft Update and from Windows Update, you will have to re-select this option from the Windows Update Web site.

**Note**
If the issue is resolved and you can successfully download and install updates, you can safely delete the SoftwareDistribution.old directory to recover disk space.

STILL failing? We have something else to try...

Use this FixIt:
How to obtain the latest version of the Windows Update Agent
Reboot.
Register the WU components:

  1. Start an elevated command prompt.
  2. Run the following commands hitting enter after each line:

    regsvr32 Jscript.dll
    regsvr32 wuapi.dll
    regsvr32 wuaueng.dll

Reboot.

Try updating.

If it still fails after that - repeat this part ONCE more...

Thanks! I was able to run SFC on there, and it actually found no problems ("no integrity violations"), but I'll keep these other snippets for later use.

Alright, your welcome DJ, and thanks for getting back. So like me you're ready for the big day(29 July) I'm just curious how many updates/patches will come next Tuesday and on the 14th of next month:think:.

I've been playing with the Technical Preview for the past several months, and I like what they've been doing. So I'm looking forward to the rollout, yeah. I will probably upgrade my Win 7 machine right away, and give them a few weeks to get the initial bugs out of the way before doing it to my Win 8 machine. Or I may get impatient and do it to both right off the bat. ;)

I was just thinking, 10 is not going to be as free as you might think, it will cost you later.
When you have Windows 8 full version, you can use it on unlimited number of PCs afterwards.
But once you upgrade it to 10 "for free", you can only use it only on the current PC and that is it.

Don't do the free upgrade then. Go out and buy a full Retail version of Windows 10.

Since when did Microsoft ever let us load Win 8 (or any version of Windows) on an "unlimited number of PCs"??
