Windows 10 Available on July 29

On July 29, you can get Windows 10 for PCs and tablets by taking advantage of the free upgrade offer, or on a new Windows 10 PC from your favorite retailer. If you purchase a new Windows 8.1 device between now and then, the Windows 10 upgrade will be available to you and many retail stores will upgrade your new device for you.

The Windows 10 upgrade is designed to be compatible with your current Windows device and applications. We are hard at work to make this upgrade process a great experience. You can reserve your free Windows 10 upgrade now through a simple reservation process. Look for this icon in your system tray at the bottom of your screen, simply click on the icon, and then complete the reservation process. You can find more details on how this works at Windows.com.

Automatic Maintenance ran this morning, but no icon for me. ... I'm not sure why it needs an email address either.

The notification popup is tied to this update - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3035583. The upgrade compatibility check, download and installation are also managed by this update so check that you did not opt out of this back in March when it was issued as an 'optional' update and hid it from future notification. With an email address they will confirm your reservation

Cheers for the info. Yeah, except Silverlight and Skype Desktop, all Windows updates are installed and up-to-date.

However, back then when GWX installed itself through Windows Update it was prevented from making outbound connections due to firewall whitelisting. I whitelisted it a few days later, when I had time to investigate what it was exactly, but maybe the initial blocking is linked to why it hasn't appeared today.

I'm way too busy to look into it at the moment, so I'll have a play when I get some time. I've got a couple of months anyway... :D

PS. I re-read the bit about the email address and you're correct it seems that's if you want confirmation of reservation.

Judging by the fact that emails go out in batches, it may take a few days to get them out to everyone MS has registered. To send them all out in one would certainly hit the internet hard.

Yes there is a windows icon in the task bar on mine .................

this is what happens when you click it

I don't know if this is an appropriate question here, but I'll ask it nonetheless:

If I am to upgrade my Windows 8.1 Pro computer to Windows 10, will it upgrade only to Windows 10, or is there a Windows 10 Pro version that it will upgrade to? I've tried doing research to no avail, so perhaps somebody here can help me. Basically, is there any difference between the versions of Windows 10 that a Windows 8.1 and Windows 8.1 Pro will upgrade to?

For the people not seeing the icon: Did you uninstall/hide update kb3022345 DiagTracking or turn the service off?

Windows 10 is a free upgrade, there's no reason to 'reserve' it. It's not as if there are going to be a limited number of copies and you might miss out.

I think they're just trying to get lots of people to upgrade as soon as they can to create a base of users. Even having run the preview builds in a VM I think I'd like to see the release settle down for a couple of months before I change my main OS.

I have my answer now, thank you. So that's good to hear. Also, will it be possible to get the Windows 8 start menu (you know, the one with all of the metro apps that takes up the whole screen that nobody besides me likes) on Windows 10? Or does it have to be the old-style Start Menu? Basically, is there a choice? I've been unable to find that information as well.

Automatic Maintenance ran this morning, but no icon for me.

I'm wondering whether it's because I use Firewall white-listing and %SystemRoot%\GWX\GWXConfigManager.exe was blocked for a few days until I investigated what it was? Or is the icon becoming active at different times on different machines?

Also, if Microsoft already have upgrade manager software installed on your system, I'm not sure why it needs an email address either. Are they're planning on supplying new Windows 10 licence keys via email?

I reserved it did not ask me for a email address

Just got back on the computer (8.1) and saw the little white Windows Icon in my notification area.

Free W10 upgrade and reserve now. OK, I reserved it just because it said that I could choose when to install, because not sure yet if I should.
Just got my W8.1 computer about 2 months ago and like it as it is (after major desktop and "design" changes)

Does anybody know if the Upgrade could be setup as a second OS (like having W7 and W8 on one computer)?
My current W8.1 is OEM, came with the computer pre-installed, no disk, just recovery partition.

For the people not seeing the icon: Did you uninstall/hide update kb3022345 DiagTracking or turn the service off?
On both my DT and LT I uninstalled KB3022345 soon after it was determined that it was causing the SFC corruptions and DISM issues and have not reinstalled as of this date so I don't think this is an issue for those that are not yet seeing the Get Windows 10 notification icon. However, I do have KB3035583 installed on both my systems and I do think that it is the main driving force for the update notifications.

I am still unsure what role KB3022345 might play in all this but I do not like the SFC file corruptions, false-positive as they may be, so it is still sitting in my update bin. Am I concerned that not installing this update may cause future problems? A bit maybe but I will cross that bridge when and if I need to.

On my system I disabled the DiagTracking service and it did not affect the GWX program.

Jim

John, I also had that thought but imagine that MS will 'detect' your version and download accordingly. My laptop is on Win 8.1 Pro; my pc is on 8.1 home - I will be in a position to reply 100% after july 29th.

Thanks Jim good to know. Maybe they just haven't installed all the required updates(it's been a lot in the last few months). I personally install everything, but there are others that do have/get problems.

On a side note, I got my reservation on my desktop 04:45 a.m.(German time) just as I was getting ready to go to work. Now on my laptop, I only have to pull my test disk, with Windows 10 (my version of a VM;) I like live systems), and put my Win7 disk in and update it too.

I'm in a dilemma whether to upgrade or not. I hate Windows 8 because the UI is just terrible. On Windows 7 I could just press my Windows key and open a tiny sleek menu where I can access Control Panel, Computer with another click, and I could use the Windows key to minimise full screen programs too, while Windows 8 brings this hideous massive screen which requires a million clicks to access anything, and I also have to wait for the animation of the icons appearing. And the UI is such a step backwards, Windows 7 had beautiful translucent menus while 8 has opaque rectangles made in Paint.

But I'm worried that Windows 10 might break my important programs and cause them not to work, especially my games.
