Win8.1/64 updates always flagged "optional" -- Why??

Every time I get automatic updates for Win8.1/64, they're "optional". I never get updates that are required unless they are non-Win8.1/64 updates.

What's the point in all these "optional" updates?

I think most of them are to prepare for Windows 10 deployment.
