Win update problems

I have been having problems with updates failing on restart. There are many post about this and on one I read about using sfc and dism to clean-up corrupted files. I used sfc/scannow and it found errors it could not correct. I then tried to use dism/online/cleanup-image/restorehealth and it came back with restorehealth option is unknown. I did a dism.exe /? and there were no arguments for checkhealth or restorehealth, even though the Windows 8 website says it is a valid argument. There are at least 10 updates that have been failing. I even went back to a 1 month old restore point and that didn't help.

Is there a way to use dism or a way to do a clean install/reload of win 8.

I notice you have no spaces.

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

There is a space between Dism & /
A space between online & /
And a space between Image & /

Make sure you are using an administrator command prompt.

Get all your spaces right.



Post a screenshot of your cmd window with DISM typed in.

You have dism.exe not dism.



Have you tried it with just dism ?

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

It might be time to consider doing a Refresh.

It was the space I was leaving out. It is running now, been at 20% for quite a while. Will let you know the results of dism and if it completes OK if I can now get updates without failing on reboot.

Dism completed and said it fixed the issues. I did a reboot and all the updates completed successfully. I checked updates and there was one for the IE flash player that I downloaded and installed successfully. This fixed my updates failing on reboot.

it seems for your situation you will need to re-install Win8.1 via "in-place" upgrade as dism.exe does not seem to fix your problem
