Hello - i'm not using Windows Defender - have McAffee Security Suite ...Defender is turned 'off' ...rec'd definitions update for Defender just now - should i still do the 'update' even tho i don't use Defender ? thanks in advance -Edythe

OK tried to do the 'update/definitions' for Defender - ''didn't install '' and still sittting in the 'windows updates' area with original MB numbers so i guess nothing of it installed.... I didn't understand reason but do yu think the 'failed' installation could be because Defender is turned 'off' ? thanks

YUP! JUST What i did but it keeps reappearing when i check for updates - lol - but i'm not going to worry about it now that you feel it's because i have Defender ''disabled'' (turned off) ... many thanks for your time !
ahhh then it's a catch -22 ... if mcaffee is 'running' it 'sees' the update for Defender as a 'threat' and won't allow the download because Defender is 'off' ... so i 'could' disable McAffee and do the Defender update - & then reverse the process but i won't mess right now - i'm making a geographal move this week so why 'court' trouble - LOL ... but.... in the event i would want to update Defender seems like i'll have to disable MCAfee while the download happens but wouldn't i be opening myself to 'trouble' with no AV/firewall running ?

yes ! WD is definitely 'off' - it's showing it in 'red' + states: '' no updates'' (since i got this PC that came loaded with McAfee and i kept it 2 yrs now) ...so WD is 'off''... as of tomorrow i will be disconnected from the 'net' - i have no iphone (horror of horrors!) ...so will be w/o internet for about 2 weeks... if you post here but no reply from me, i'll eventually see it when i get back 'here' ... thanks again so much !

IT'S A 'quirk' alright but what's a user to do? I'd turn-off McAfee while i'd be updating Defender (that is so far out of date that it couldn't protect my PC at all while the update would be taking place) so there would be ''protection' at all ...guess i could activate W-Firewall but that could be outdated also.... oh well
