Several links and articles all point to a 'free' windows 10 upgrade to everything on Win 7 and over.

I was curious. So I downloaded what I was told would be the means of installing win 10, an ISO file and I also downloaded something (8gb) called a Technical preview but was linked at Win 10 free. There is also a Win 10 beta out. BUT, Win 10 is not due till late this year, so I tried it anyway, on my laptop to save any potential hazard to my desktop tower.

It downloaded and began installation, then after installation it said that it could not be run and my laptop was being restored to previous, and it did, successfully.

What do you guys know about win 10 free upgrade and does it actually 'exist' yet?

There is only the Technical Preview/Insider Preview, no beta.

See here: New Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 10074 now available for where to download the latest version. I have it running in a Virtual Machine via Oracle VirtualBox under Windows 8.1 Pro X64 and on a Dell 15R laptop.

Still some bugs but it's getting better.

Edit: Current info says end of July for RTM (Release To Manufacturing) so it should be available some time in early August, but nothing definite yet.

Check out the windows 10 forums on tenforums.com

Thank you, coincidentally, just had a follow up call from tech who came down line and sorted out some upgrades, I mentioned this and he said dont - as you said tech prev only. I have decided not to be tempted and to wait for offer in due course from MS as I am a user who gets updates from them.

If you want to familiarize yourself with Windows 10, I suggest you run it in a virtual partition. That does not really impact your curren system. I have made a tutorial that shows you how to install and operate that. See here.
