Solved Win 8.1 desktop right click takes 15 seconds!

I upgraded from Win 8 Pro with Media Center to 8.1 Pro with Media Center. Upgrade went smooth (but what's with going completely thru the install BEFORE asking if you accept the new license?)

But now it takes 15 seconds to open the right click menu on the desktop as opposed to probably less than 1/10 of a second before. All other right clicks seem normal. No significant CPU usage during the wait.

If it matters, I'm pretty damn vanilla but I do have Start8 and ModernMix.

Also if its significant, Catalyst Control Panel won't start (I'll reinstall the latest but it was current less than a week ago).

Also my secondary monitor is set to the correct resolution (1920x1080) but its shrunk with a more than half inch black border around it. I'm hoping the Catalyst/driver reinstall fixes this too.

I just noticed it has the time wrong also. I'm still set to Arizona time (no DST) but it incorrectly shows time an hour later than actual and when I change to a different timezone it stays an hour off from what that time zone actually is.

I hope I didn't make a mistake by not waiting a week to upgrade.

Was it an upgrade over Windows 8, maybe you had something that wasn't working right in 8 before you updated it- Or maybe a program thats not quite compatible with 8?

Check your CPU and Hard Drive, see if they are pegged out to 100%, and check your Startup Programs, disable them all and then turn them back on one by one until the issue comes back.

As I said, there was no CPU usage other than the usual trace amount. Per your suggestion, I checked and there was no I/O either.

You might have a shell extension that was compatible with Windows 8 but not with Windows 8.1.

That was it. An Nvidia extension.

Thanks!

FWIW I was not happy to find that even after using Nvidia's remove everything procedure, this extension remained AND worse still, there were still several hundreds of registry references to Nvidia stuff. Basically ticking time bombs and performance robbing clutter. Same with files in the Windows folder.

For readers, this was not a problem caused by the Win 8.1 upgrade. That extension was improperly handled by the upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 last year. The extension was for an older version of drivers and has served no purpose since then. But it didn't go nuts before Win 8.1.

Anyone know if it would be suicide to delete all the remaining files in the Windows folder from the install that included the bad extension? I was able to identify them all by file create time stamps. I just don't know what bad things can happen with registry entries that might point to them. But none of those files are supposed to be in a Win 8 or 8.1 system, so damned if I do and damned if I don't?

In other words, it WAS a compatibility problem, glad it got nailed. Context Menu would have been my next guess, but he got it. I always do a fresh install of any drivers, even if a Windows 8.x update seems to update them.

I use nVidia so I'll probably see this happen when I Update to 8.1 - The "GeForce Experience" Program that handles updating the Drivers has a "Clean Install" selection.

You can remove the extension from the NVIDIA Control panel->Desktop and uncheck Add Desktop Context Menu

Hi friends, there is yet one more solution. The culprit is "Bluetooth".
Try this.....Hover your cursor to right top corner of the screen to bring out Charms. Click on "Settings" or the cog wheel icon click on "change pc settings" at the extreme bottom. Click on "PC and Devices" on top of the list then click on "Bluetooth" and switch it "On" (If its On, switch it Off) and leave it On or Off respectively, close the window. Check right click delay now.

Please post your comments : Whether it helped you or not so that it helps others like you too (y) cheers ;):D:cool:
