Why so many Application Data folders

Started looking for Application Data folders and found three main folder, but under those were a pile of them - why so many and why are all of them showing a shortcut as the parent folder?

Edit: The username\Application Data folder is not accessible even with security set to Everyone, why is that?

Microsoft did that, to keep infections from planting theirselves into various folders. If you have Hidden Folders set to show, you should be able to under. Application Data was kept for XP compatibility. Windows 8 Appdata Folder Location

Finally broke in by setting Owner > Type to Allow which I missed before. Why do they all show as shortcuts instead of folders?

Because of the design of Windows 8. The Shortcuts will show you the main folder. It should point back to the Administrator folder or Default folder.

The shortcut does not contain a path under properties and each shortcut takes me down to another layer of which there does not seem to be an end - I traced 23 before giving up. As you say, it could just be reloading Default folder and making it look like a new level. Windows 8 is a trip... thanks and blessings...

Application Data does not really exist, it's a Symbolic Link to the AppData folder. Trying to traverse via Windows Explorer doesn't work though I don't know why. Seems like Windows Explorer should know how to handle Symbolic Links.

Incorrect. It is being done, to keep infections from taking over the machines. It is called being Pro-active on stopping computers turning into Bot's.
