who and why is anyone going for the free Win10 upgrade ?

I agree and that is why I will wait to upgrade for at least a month. I will watch how things go before I upgrade.

Usually the problem with new OS's - is not the OS, it's getting hw drivers that are compatible with whatever computer the OS is on.

Saying that, I'll probably upgrade the MS Surface 3.

The Toshiba laptop... I'll wait until it's stabilized i.e. give them time to develop the drivers for it.

I think I will be keeping 8.1 for a while W10 insider program survives. I have W10 in a dual boot and will start transferring main programs to it when it gets to the regular stage. As they are both on same machine, I can compare both systems and at least for now, there is not much of performance difference. W8.1 is still very viable OS but W10 seams like it is a peek into the future with it's integration in different devices.

I would get it for my desktop computer but I am leery about putting on my Windows 8 tablet. Windows 8.1 works so well on my tablet I don't want to mess anything up. It's hard to imagine anything working better than 8.1 on a tablet, And I think I would miss the charms bar.
