So what is a Baby Boomer ?

Some friends and I had an argument about this.

He contends that it is anyone born on or after Jan 1st 1960 and on or before December 31st 1969 - In other words, any year where the Year started with "196x"

ANOTHER friend contends that it is anyone born in the 196 th DECADE, wich starts on Jan 1st 1961 and runs until December 31st 1970.

Just to be awkward and to play a sort of "Devil's Advocate" ** I decided to put forward the argument that it was anyone who reached their 'teens at the time, So :-

Using Friend No. 1's logic it's anyone who was 13 on or before Jan 1st 1960 or 13 on or before December 31st 1969.

Using Friend No 2's logic, the dates would be Jan 1st 1961 and December 31st 1970.

Merlin

Notes :-

** - It's not a genuine case of Devil's advocate, of course, it's just my habit of listening to the first competing arguments and then thinkivng of something a wee bit contentious or 'outside the box".

If it's an interesting topic, I'll even do this when I actually think that the right rweason has been already given, just to keep the discussion going.

It’s difficult to describe who a Baby Boomer is, but most generally it is we that were born during the post WWII baby boom, so chronologically one could have been a teener in the late 50’s all the way up into the 70's.

Baby boomers are people born during the demographic Post–World War II baby boom between the years 1946 and 1964. According to the U.S. Census Bureau,[2] the term "baby boomer" is also used in a cultural context. Therefore, it is impossible to achieve broad consensus of a precise date definition, even within a given territory. Different groups, organizations, individuals, and scholars may have widely varying opinions on what constitutes a baby boomer, both technically and culturally. Ascribing universal attributes to a broad generation is difficult, and some observers believe that it is inherently impossible. Nonetheless, many people have attempted to determine the broad cultural similarities and historical impact of the generation, and thus the term has gained widespread popular usage.

I was introduced into this "Vale of Tears" in 1949 and I always reckoned that being Eleven in 1960 was just about spot on.

We still had 11 Plus so I (only just) avoided the unholy mess that went under the name of "Comprehensive Education" and the various experimental theories that made ignoramuses of three generations of schoolchildren.

I was old enough (in '66) to catch the (in)famous Dylan Tour where he went Electric; he scandalised a whole HOST of Middle-Class, heads up their ass, observer colour supplement readers and the whole membership roster of Woodie Guthry Hairy Jumper, kniit your own doilies, beardy, Folky Brigade.

There seem to be many different criteria for defining 'Baby Boomers' but I agree with HippsieGypsy's mid to late 1940's suggestion. Mind you, It is, I feel, not a phrase that you can place in any one rigid timeline, it defined a whole generation of kids but in the long run, being a Baby Boomer is a bit like being California - Not so much a State - more a State of mind.........

My generation, of course, are now the people living in homes worth half a Million that cost them (back in the early Seventies) Five or six Thousand to buy.

That is unless, like me, you were married to women who were excellent Housekeepers.

My Two ex wives were BOTH good at Housekeeping - each time I got divorced - THEY kept the house.

I did, however, each time get custody of the Overdraft.

Ain't life a Bee-atch...........

From my understanding, the Boomer generation ended in '64. IOW, if you were born in '65, you're not a Boomer.

Thought I would join in here, I am near the end of the 41 to 50 age group, growing up in the 80's was great

Was tempted to say 90+ as no one in that category ;)

56 chronologically but got stuck around 17 mentally. Though sometimes feels like I'm already 90+ mentally :D.

Great to see I could choose the middle box in the poll, makes me feel a whole lot younger.

I wonder how they would've faired on Shark Tank? :p

In Shark Tank, or as we Europeans call it Dragon's Den? Early 70's, pitching the idea?

William: Hi, my name is William and this is my friend Paul. We are here to ask you for 100,000 dollars, for which we give you a 10% stake in our company Traf-O-Data.

Everyone knows how important it is to know exactly how many vehicles are using our road networks. The traffic counters do their job but to get that information from the counters is unreliable and hard work.

Kevin O'Leary interrupts: There must be a better way!!!

William continues: Yes there is! Our device reads the raw data from roadway traffic counters and creates reports for traffic engineers.

Marc Cuban: That means that your customers would be counties and states. You'd have to sell an awful lot of those boxes to get even close the value you think your business has at the moment, 1 Million. Is that the only product you have?

Paul: No. We have also plans to create a simple interpreter for the Altair computer kit so that everyone could use it. In our vision every school kid has a computer, every home and office desk. We've figured that jumping in today we could be market leaders in a few years.

Kevin O'Leary: You are dead to me, coming here with your Start Trek stories and trying to get my kids heritage invested in some comic book stuff. Go away!

William: But we really believe in our ideas.

Robert Herjavec: Have you sold any of those traffic counters?

Paul: No.

Barbara Corcoran: Have any computer companies shown any interest in you Altair interpreter? Have you shown the Altair interpreter to someone?

William: No. We do in fact not have the computer interpreter yet, we have an idea and we think we could make it.

Daymond John: I have said nothing, only listened. Now I have heard enough. I'm out.

Barbara: I'm out.

Robert: I'm out.

Mark: I'm out.

Kevin: I have a multi million dollar business empire and I do not have computer on my desk, now you tell every kid will have. I'm so out!

Camera follows as William and Paul walk away, stopping by a phone booth near the building entrance. Paul puts in a coin and dials a number.

"Mom? Could you please wire us some money, we want to come home".
