Where to buy drive caddies/mounting brackets?

OK, people are probably thinking I should have researched this. And I have. But I am having trouble finding sites that sell drive caddies/mounting brackets. not just for any drive, but for 2 particular drives I have bought. When they arrived I noticed that they didnt come with mounts to install them, and then I realized that the reason is because they are simply bare drives with nothing else included, which is something I forgot about when I ordered them. Everywhere I look I find the bare drives but no brackets, or you have to buy them as a bundle, or I cant find the brackets at all.

One is a Western Digital Scorpio Blue (1TB, 5400RPM, 9.5mm). The other is a HGST/Hitachi Travelstar 7K1000 (1TB, 7200 RPM, 9.5mm). I am trying to fit them inside an ASUS G75VW gaming laptop.A technician friend has told me WD drives need special brackets, he said that standard brackets like the one that came inside my laptop with the manufacturer drive wont fit them (my drive crashed for the 2nd time so I'm replacing it). I dont need anything fancy-looking, just plain old silver/gray brackets will be fine. Links from reputable sites like Newegg/Amazon/eBay are preferred if possible, since that's where I buy most of my electronics.

Thanks for any help!

The bracket should come off the original drive that is installed in the laptop. The whole thing should come out then you remove the bracket from the drive then put the bracket on the new drive and replace into laptop. If your looking for an extra bracket, I would contact Asus directly and see what they have to say.

If you're in the US or Canada, you can buy them directly from Asus.

I'd guess that your technician friend is mistaken about WDC drives. (I think that the form factor is an industry standard.) You can test that with the existing adapter.

I had to order a second drive caddy for my ASUS K75DE from the estore to add a second drive. It didn't come with any screws.

The screws for mounting the drive in the caddy were easy to find, they were just your standard screw you use to mount drives in any PC. The screws to mount the caddy in the laptop were a little harder to find. Luckily I had some screws I saved from another laptop that was junk, that fit. I'm not sure this is a universal, one size fits all, item. Even if you find it somewhere else there is no guaranty that one will have the screws to match your laptop. Having to order it in the first place was what chessed me off.

Well this is just my luck then. not only does their eStore say that the brackets are out of stock, but it says right there on the page that the screws arent included. I need 2 caddies and the one I had is unusuable. I had to carefully rip it out of the frame with pliers after screwing them in too tightly. Luckily nothing is damaged. Where can I buy screws that are guaranteed to fit? is there another source for the caddies? My model is ASUS G75VW. I am becoming more unsatisfied with ASUS as the yrs have passed, Im having more and more problems with them. When this one finally goes to the grave I think ill go with MSI or Sager/Clevo.

I don't know if the eStore sells the screws that attach it to the laptop. I had a hard enough time just finding the caddy. I didn't look online for them either as I scrounged up what I needed from my parts bin. You'll just have to troll though Google or Bing etc and see if you can find one that comes with the screws. Maybe give eBay a look? There aren't or weren't a lot of laptops with two drive bays so normally you would just reuse what's in it when you swap out a drive. My father ran in to a similar situation with his HP laptop. It had two drive bays but the second bay was missing the drive caddy and the SATA/Power cables. He had to order them from HP. I don't know if the screws were included, I'd have to ask him.

No , the eStore doesnt sell the screws. I have already checked Amazon, Ebay, and TigerDirect/CompUSA for the caddy, noone has them, looks like ASUS has a monopoly on it. I also found laptopscrews.com, now I just have to determine exactly which sizes I need.

That drive caddy may be a custom made part for that specific make and model of laptop. I ordered it from the eStore to be sure it would fit. The screws to mount the hard drive to the caddy are your standard screws you use to mount just about any hard drive in a PC or laptop. I've got tons of those. The screws that mounted the caddy in my laptop were small with a very fine thread. They didn't look like anything I had on hand so I went looking and pulled a couple from an old dell laptop that was for parts only. Those screws should have been included with the caddy. You'd have to get a hold of the service manual for your laptop to get the exact size. If you can hunt up a part number you could likely order them from ASUS. You may have to go though the service center instead of the eStore.

Sorry. I didn't notice that they were out of stock when I checked previously. (Maybe the weren't at the moment.)

The Asus estore lists the screws:

Note:
Screws not included.
Requires (4) M3x3 screws & (2) M2.5x5 screws.

(Metric screws).

eBay lists one of the caddies at the moment:

Asus G73J Hard Drive Caddy Screws Genuine Laptop Tested | eBay

it appears to be RFE (removed from equipment).

@ bobkn: Thanks you're a lifesaver., sometimes waiting on eStore to restock can take weeks, and that would leave me w/o a boot drivr. youhe caddy is for G73 but its compatible with G75. Plus I didnt want to buy caddy and screws separately. Its just greedy fr asus to pricegouge and then add insult to injuryby not including screws. I dont care that its used , its just a caddy. Thanks!
