I purchased a Windows 8 Pro x64 Installation DVD from Staples for $ 69.95
back in late October 2012 but I have never been able to get Windows 8 to do the upgrade.
I tried everything a person with 22 years experience would try including a ton of
suggestions offered here and at other forums.

When I first tried to do the upgrade, It failed at 83% and failed after several other attempts.
Now at Feb 2013 it won't even start the install upgrade process.

Consider this:
The new price listed at MS store for Windows 8 Pro upgrade is 249.00
upgrade.?? really?? The requirements insist you must be running Windows 7 or other
qualifying version so I must assume they do mean upgrade.

As of October 2012 I have not been able to use a purchased totally legal
DVD copy of Windows 8 Pro 64 bit to do the upgrade.
This problem affected an Asus P7P55D-E Pro M Board and now an Asus
P8Z77-V Pro/Thunderbolt. I am however able to install or reinstall Windows 7 Pro xc64 with
a bootable 4 gb thumb drive from a windows 7 pro x64 ISO file. But it cannot be
done using the DVD.

I assume I could use the license key I purchased IF I could get a copy of
Windows 8 Pro x64 as an ISO image.
I have read a lot of alarming things about what is going on with EMM ES (MS)
Also that IO error I/O Error 0xc00000e9 I/O Error 0xc00000e9
happens when trying to boot with and install windows 8
cheers,
pkw

Not clear what you are asking.

Do you want to try and install 8 from a thumb drive?

Is that why you want the iso ?

If so, you can get it from the dvd you already have . Any number of free iso handlers will create bootable iso image from that dvd. You can then put it on a thumb drive.

Don't know if it will work any better for you - but it's worth a go.

Try the free (unregistered) version Poweriso.

Yes - Indeed that is what I "need" to do. As mentioned,
I cannot install any Windows type from a the Windows DVD - It fails every time. THANK YOU for the reply
I will try to create an ISO image from the DVD and then make a bootable
thumb drive from a Sandisk usb drive. That works for SWindows 7 should work for
windows 8 Unless my guess.

My guess is this. Name License purchased prior to Jan that has NOT been installed and activated is now not valid. Just a guess but that's what it seems to me.

Have you tried a different DVD drive? From what I read above, you could be getting intermittent
DVD Drive errors.

Thanks Wynona for you suggestion.
The issue I described happens with the desktop and
the laptop when trying to do the upgrade
It also happened on a different machine altogether when
trying to upgrade it's windows 7 Pro -
The following is the error I got on both machines Note I have two
COA license keys.

When trying to install the 64 bit version, on LapTop
the followimg message appears after selecting run setup
from the pop up window.
The file "autorun.dll" could not be loaded or is corrupted
Setup cannot continue. Error code is [0x17]

Error 23 as that is, suggests a defective DVD therefore I havce two defective
DVD copies of Windows 8 Preo x64

Not sure what your last paragraph means . . . are you saying you actually have two bad Win 8 Pro DVDs? If not, then there's something else wrong . . .

Even though I've heard there are no dumb questions, I feel pretty dumb asking this one, since you're trying to install X64 . . . both machines are at least dual core? <ducking and running>
