Hi there
What actually do most people DOWNLOAD or STREAM these days that needs anything like 1.0 GBs -- I'd rather have 20mbs with UNLIMITED bandwidth than 1 GBS where I'd use my monthly allocation in watching maybe 2 full HD movies streamed by say NETFLIX.

Pure speed alone is a WASTE unless a) you have a SENSIBLE use for it and b) you can make use of it with UNLIMITED bandwidth.

Seems a bit like the Mega pixel specs in small digital cameras -- like Apple is touting a 24 MP camera --in a PHONE with a tiny sensor and a lens that will be totally not fit for purpose for decent resolution with that size sensor.

(Actually for decent viewing experience all you really need for a decent movie is a CONSTANT speed of around 2mbs - minimum -- which can be done easily via Wi-Fi connection. I like having fast broadband but I don't download that much --for me the UNLIMITED bandwidth is more important as I often stream movies etc from the Internet - I don't download them first - I just play them in Real time or watch live sports from such services as SKY GO -- a days worth of HD TV from the internet requires decent bandwidth too ).

Cheers
jimbo

They've upped speeds in my area. Thinking of upping yet again. Until May of this year I had .8MB up and 1.5MB down. Only other option in my area is Comsux. Have heard a friend do nothing but complain about their service.

Your speeds are fine for web browsing and SD streaming :) Unless you are a heavy gamer I don't see why you should :)

Some people here barely have 1Mbps download in the rural areas

Hi jimbo,

I don't disagree with you on your points but speaking for myself and my ISP, they do not throttle my speed and I have no restrictions/metering on my bandwidth. It is consistently the same speed whether it be at 2am or 2pm. I like having the fast download speed not just for the obvious movie streaming (Netflix) but also for online gaming and my Xbox console utilizing the Live service. I also stream Sirius XM Internet Radio throughout my home and that runs 24/7 even if my receiver is off.

So a good scenario for me where the d/l speed is consistent is that my son can be playing his Xbox games online while my wife is enjoying the streaming Sirius XM music and I am using Skype to video conference with a client, all while at least three laptops and one desktop have a constant connection at the same time and not once service notices a blip in quality.

That all said, I only have a 100Mbs/ DL service so I also do not see the point in a 1GB speed. Maybe for research purposes? It would be nice if the OP (dlist) chimed in on his speed usage. I also question if this is for his home or office. My post is for my home speeds.

Legally, 'unlimited' means nothing :) I'd check the fair usage policy for your ISP since a couple here in the UK have a fair usage policy of 300GB a month and anything more will incur 'Technical Measures' as defined by legislation (Digital Economy Act 2010 [UK]).

Also, I'm not sure why you would have an internet radio constantly eating bandwidth which could be utilised elsewhere but if it works for you. :)

Read it and ...laugh

I used to be on 30 +Mps now due to no cable, bad WiFi, and blown smartphone, I am back on my old tried and trusty ZTE F107 ( 3 Pay as You Go ).

Ahh, the joys of youth.....
