Useful error messages

OK, better no error messages, but failing that, after decades of Windows development, I'd like them to be able to produce an OS that says things like;

"Module suchand such.dll could not run, it conflicted with module this and that.exe because it expected a different version". Or whatever.

Rather than the total waste of space that we do get.

First and foremost they should clean-up the access to the basic settings. They had such a nice approach in Vista where you went via Personalize on the desktop and got the page with all the basic settings. In Win7 they have the same mess as in XP where you have to chase all over the place to find the buttons for the settings.

Then they should keep things logical. Why do I need to go to Computer > Properties to set my restore points. That belongs into the Restore Center.

They also should create a equally easy access (like the Vista desktop properties) to the more advanced system functions like Device manager, Disk Management , Services, etc. Yes, there are some grouped in Computer > Manage, but there is room for improvement.

I have the impression they made Win7 intentionally look as messy as XP because they needed to cater for that crowd. But that is not very logical (from a technical point of view - maybe it is from a business point of view).

Last not least they should put all this eye candy stuff somewhere on the backburner. Who needs it. If I want a nice desktop, I take one of my own pictures. I do not need pictures from Slowenia.

Well, that's my 5 cents worth.

A bit controversial, maybe, thinking how much some users oppose the libraries but i would like to see the Libraries concept to be developed to a completely new level.

I mean, I like Libraries in Seven. I would like to see files with registered, common extensions to be added to corresponding library automatically. If I save or download a jpg or png, it would be found in pictures library, not depending where I save it. Downloaded exe, zip, rar etc. automatically to download library, docs to documents, PDF to ebooks, avi and mpg to videos, mp3 to music. etc.

There could then be a new entry in context menu for instance when right clicking Pictures library: "Some files in this library are not saved in Pictures folder. Would you like to move or copy them to C:\Users\Kari\Pictures?"

I don't know if anyone has posted this already, but I would like to see better management for multiple monitors. It would be nice to be able to configure power option indepentantly, spread the taskbar between them, etc.

Not sure if this is better placed here or in the What Don't You Like About Windows 7 thread.

I would like to see the complete removal of HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) as it will decrease boot time to a great extent. Ubuntu 10.4 alpha team has already remove HAL completely from GRUB bootloader.

+1, this is a good idea. And I really do not understand why people do not like libraries. It is such a simple and convenient concept. One has to be really behind the times not to like it.

If I remember correctly guest mode was on the drawning board, but not in the final product.

Gotcha. Maybe I'll install a copy of the RC I still have on a virtual machine, and find out.

It's not in the RC. I'll see if I can get a hold of a copy of the Beta, and see if it's there. That Lifehacker article was written in March last year, before the RC was out.
