What to do if Windows 8 Release Preview won't install

Some users have bumped into installation errors with the latest flavor of Windows 8. Microsoft says you may need to tweak or update your BIOS to solve the issue.

Have any of you tried to install the new Windows 8 Release Preview only to face the message: "Your PC's CPU isn't compatible with Windows 8."

If so, the solution to the problem may lie in your computer's BIOS.

well Brink, I did not install the release version yet.

What I do not understand is: everything went ok with the 2 previous versions, why not in the 3d?

One would imagine that MS would at least test this on different hardware before release.

I will stay away for the moment I guess.

thanks for the info

Jeff

Aha - this has already been mentioned several times on Eightforums......If you read the following (especially the hilarous "work-round" response you will see Microsoft saying "sorry - we said your PC will run 8 if it runs 7 but we've changed our minds...so buy a new PC why don't you!"

Booting from Windows 8 Release Preview DVD - error code 0x0000005D - Microsoft Answers

What gets me is, WHY did the CP version work so flawlessly, but supposing the RP is more stable/advance and has caused havoc when doing a clean install. Talked to MS yesterday about the math co-processors not working, and they told me it was an Intel issue, Intel said it worked till I updated so therefore it is a Microsoft issue. Most here might not think this a big deal, BUT it really is. Todays games rely on your math co-processor to draw triangle, rectangles, circles, do spreadsheet calculations, etc. Really weird the upgraded version of Windows 8 trashed what was working in the CP version of Windows 8.

Guys I'm currently using Windows 8 CP.

I want to know is there any benefit of installing Windows 8 RP from your experiences.. means should I install it or not? Thanks :)

Driver Install Failure

What gets me is, WHY did the CP version work so flawlessly, but supposing the RP is more stable/advance and has caused havoc when doing a clean install.

In my case, W8DP has been the best version (easily restorable Start Menu and all of my drivers installed and worked first time).

W8CP would not correctly install my sound driver (it says that it's properly installed, but I only hear buzzing noises).

I haven't had time to install W8RP, I'm too busy with other problems.
It sounds like I should wait a couple of weeks, so that MS can "iron out" all of the new bugs they've introduced.

I'm not expecting much (based on my W8CP experience). :(

Update
W8RP has exactly the same problems as W8CP.
It won't install my MB sound driver correctly (it claims that everything is "hunky-dory" though).

I tried to dual boot win 8 release preview and it all went to hell, tried installing it and I got a message saying my hard drive partition needed to be at least 20gb, why I made it initially 20gb I have no clue, of course its actually only about 19.8gb and thats why win 8 release preview wouldnt install.

Went back into widows 7 partition and fired up partition wizard to make the win 7 smaller and of course therefore the win 8 partition bigger, after resizing the program hung, then add to manually power down the computer and thats when my motherboard fried out on me.

Now in the process of building a whole new computer, going with asus z77 board, 16gb of memory, I5 3570K cpu, the works, should be sweet when I am done and no I am not going dual boot win 8 onto it

I could easily have 16gb of memory here but it won't solve a partitioning problem. But it certainly won't be any help when a board goes on you!

When finally getting around to getting a new supply for the previous build I ran Vista on as well as tested 7 with having already replaced the board but sat for the two years.. nothing! Nada on two supplies tried out which includes the one just ordered. A supply tester will tell if both of those are toast or simply put the 2010 new board came in DOA?!

A little late now for sending the board back for sure and finding another AM2 board to salvage the rest? Having a second OS on the present build is what saw the RP go on while it was the CP that was able to go onto VM Player. There you need either a dvd or mount the iso as a new dvd/cd drive for the new VM and no go with either. :(

According to Whitepaper released by Microsoft, Your CPU should support PAE/NX/SSE2 in order to install Windows 8 on the system. You can use Coreinfo tool to check whether it supports or not.

Solution to this would be upgrading BIOS and enable NX from BIOS settings.

Yes, we've read that on the MS Website a few times now, but if my CPU doesn't support NX then it's a 100% "NO SALE" for Win 8.....byeeeee!!

Hello Jeff,

I haven't had any issues with doing a clean install of Windows 8 RP so far. The issue mentioned in the article is an easy fix though.

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2299-clean-install-windows-8-a.html

The only installation problem I ran into was trying to get the RP not the CP however but the RP to go onto a VM with the latest VM Player. No problem with VirtualBox however while the install to the second drive here after two weeks started seeing freezes!

On the first day of the two debacle the explorer windows and some other things started locking forcing a hard boot after having been booted in 8 for several hours. The next time I went to boot only the Start screen and settings, apps side bar would work except for the Refresh PC option pointing out missing files that soon?

After a refresh you will need to install all programs and drivers from scratch while your personal files are packed away in the Windows.old folder if you elect that option. Otherwise a complete wipe. As for installing 8 by optical or flash drive the find here is that it takes about the same time as XP and Vista when compared to how fast 7 typically installs.

I lost all my drivers in both CP and RP. Installation of my network adapter driver broke horribly in RP. It shows up in device manager and says it's fine, but it doesn't work -- sounds like the audio driver mentioned earlier in this thread.

Try the Network troubleshooter found in the Control Panel>Network & Sharing Center.

Network and Sharing Center.jpg

Once you lose the connection you may have to shut it all down and unplug the ac adapter for the dsl or cable modem plus any router.

Network Advanced Settings1.jpg

Network Advanced Settings2.jpg

Network Advanced Settings3.jpg

From there replug the modem back in ahd wait a minute or so for it to resync with the ISP before doing anything else. If you have a router added on you then plug that back in and allow it to pose as the pc to re-establish the Mac and private IP addresses.

Basically you are refreshing the connection by using this method. Once those two tasks are tended to you power up the system and wait to see if the network icon if made visible sees the red X change to green. If it doesn't once Windows finishes loading up go into the N&S section and use the troubleshooting tool.

Network and Internet Troubleshooting.jpg

Note there's a little advanced link you click and will see the "apply fix. Once the connection is re-established you will see the same network settings screen appear that you see when going to install a fresh copy of Windows. You start off by clicking the connect to a network option once you are in the N&S Center to arrive at the screen above and then see the selection screen for Home, Work, or Publc.

Network and Sharing Center Home selection.jpg

You'll likely want the network icon set to show in the system notification area first however to watch. Generally this works with the first attempt as long as you wait a few extra seconds inbetween each step.

Tried the troubleshooter -- it couldn't detect the network adapter, although it was visible in the device manager.

I ended up getting a tiny little USB network adapter and its faster than the built in one that isn't working so I guess the failure to install properly turned out to be a net gain ;)

Here I simply added in a Netgear GA311 pci type ethernet card when changing ISPs back in 2009 rather then using the onboard WLan jack and did get bumped offline a few times but restored quickly following the steps there. The old dsl adapter was usb that didn't even see XP x64 support let alone Vista x64 or 7 x64!

Even with the new cable ISP the outdated modem they provided had to go as well! Lately they dumped the usb only for a dual modem with both usb and RJ-45 making life easier except only one RJ-45 ethernet jack instead of being able to plug the desktop in the modem directly it's back to the router time. :(

Despite having a driver software disk I've never had to use it for any OS including 8 since the detection and install of the driver is automatic. Nic cards are generally faster then usb to start with and found to be more reliable if eventually you ever need to replace the new one you have now. You can find those cheap as low as $15 when shopping around or simply grab one at a Walmart or office supply store for a bit more however. :D Try $24-$30 at a retail outlet.

That doesn't help any! Your options are limited for sure!

Here I ended up with 8 on VBox since changing one bios setting worked for 7 with ease but trashed the RP install on the second drive making it unbootable. Originally with the CP the version of VM Player wouldn't allow that release to connect until the next verison came out correcting a glitch. The RP simply refused to install on it however and seems to go on VBox without issue.

Since the RP install was pooched I tossed another OS project on and the other OS happens to have a different VBox where the first 8 screen appears but... "that's all folks!"? :( So much for the screen capture there as well it seems showing 8 on the Linux VBox.

Lol, "pooched" sounds like a good description of that whole situation. What a hassle :(
