What languages can you speak (or aspire to speak)?

Brazilian, I was born and raised there. Been here for 10 years after a couple in The Netherlands. My spoken accent is much stronger than my written one... Thanks for the compliment though

I don't think I can understand Latin, written or spoken (whcih I might have heard in church, although I am not THAT old...). I believe Portuguese evolved from Vulgar Latin which is different from the Classic one and I beleive the latter is what is taought today (I just learnerd that Vulgar Latin had no written form) . Anyway, not my speciality, so don't trust me on this...

No problem, the only thing I know is that (from tales from my old Latin Teacher) that it is possible to go to Brazil speaking Latin, Ancient Greek, Italian and English and be able to read the newspaper. He subsequently went onto learn Brazilian Portugese.

Oh and I like your avatar, I can tell which way this one's going.

I am always puzzled by the argument that some think they do no need another language because they do not travel. How about using foreign languages to learn about other cultures of to inform yourself about world events from another perspective. I think single language people miss a lot.
I grew up with German and French (which is my favorite language) and started leaning English some 60+ years ago. And in school, Latin was a must - it really should be for everybody because that's how one learns the structure and origin of most western languages. I can manage in some other languages but am not really fluent. Since I lived half of my life all over the world, I have a very high appreciation of the value of language knowledge.

There aren't enough hours in the day for me to do all the things I want in English never mind a foreign language

I have worked in several different countries over the years, attempt to speak some languages better than others, most basic conversation at best, others very little.

French, Spanish, Indonesian, Arabic, Russian, Mandarin (very little), Filipino.

I wouldn't know since I don't speak Spanish, but I know it can be very easy to offend someone in another language if you don't know exactly what you are doing. Did you know that the French term for "repeat" is pronounced very similarly to the French term for "Pass gas"?

Hi Kari, I speak Hindi (the national language), Marathi (the state language), Marwari (mother tongue), Sindhi (my girlfriend's mother tongue), Gujrati and Kacchi (neighbor states).
