What do normal people think of new Windows 8 PCs?

One thing that’s fascinating about HSN is that it’s a community made up of people who are very different from the tech bloggers and gadget addicts that tend to hang around places like this.

Hipsters and techies might scoff at HSN, whose habitués are about as far as you can get from Silicon Valley and Williamsburg when it comes to tech and design sophistication, but HSN shoppers buy a lot of technology. And because they’re a community, they love to leave reviews. It is no accident that every HSN listing for a Windows 8 PC has a Pinterest button alongside the Facebook Like and Tweet This buttons.

So I was particularly eager to read the first reactions to these new devices from, for lack of a better word, normal people.

Do any normal people post here? :D

A Guy

It doesn't matter what "normal" people think. normal people get a new OS with a new PC or tablet and then get whatever is on there. And unless they are professionals using specific software (i.e. CAD, quickbooks) don't even care or know if it is windows.
- 99% of users keep the same OS till the PC dies
- 99% of the users think windows is the PC brand
- 99% of the users that know windows is the OS (they don't know what an OS actually does, though), don't know the version. If someone re-arranges their familiar desktop links, they think it is a new OS
- 99% of the users couldn't even uninstall a program, or find the desktop icon of the software. If it disappears from the desktop, they think they don't have that software anymore.
- 99% of users buy a new PC and just make sure at Bestbuy that it also can do "facebook and email"

Don't even come with desktop mode or Metro, or registry or CMD... if you mention "file type", they think you are a nuclear scientist.

Summed up very nicely :D

It's easy enough once you know, not hard to accomplish..but not intuitive.

When the iPhone first came out it had a whole new concept for a smartphone using touch and gestures that were not intuitive at all. Now regardless of which phone you get the gestures are only intuitive because people have been doing it for years. It has to start somewhere when something is changed to that degree.

It's both. It costs a 1,000 dollars, and it's pretty awesome to use! Although the display model might be a bit damaged as the screen is suppose to flip when you put it in tent mode.

If it's not different, then it would mean assimilation to what a group considers to be the norm, regardless of it's better or not.

Well that's not the point that was argued. It's often just left at - change is good, different is good, etc. The kind of change is never mentioned. What you just typed is another way of saying what I've been saying for a freaking year.

The change is pretty well stated for Windows 8. In the whole scheme of things, it's about uniting inputs and UI designs so they are pretty flawless. Not only that, with the new apps, you have a new selection of software that you once used on a smartphone or phablet on a MUCH more powerful computing device. Among MANY other things...

Why? Oh why? are some people always against different is beyond me!

I demand every post from you from now on be written in Sumerian cuneiform.
Here is your reference guide:
View attachment 10854

I have time to address this now. I think you took my post out of context to justify the means to your own end. On the other hand perhaps I should have used words such as similar, diverse, or distinct along with different.

I could take the time and learn Sumerian cuneiform to write my posts, but that would defeat my purpose to convey my thoughts to those here on the forum who wouldn't understand it. I could write in italic, or in bold italic, or in a bigger font, or in a different font style. They are different, but similar.

Trees and bushes -> Different, but similar
Birds and bats -> Different, but similar
Gambling verses investing in the stock market -> Different, but similar
Windows 95 verses DOS -> Different, but similar
Windows 98 verses Windows 95 -> Different, but similar
I'm sure you get the idea.
Many of us think Windows 8, although different, but similar, to be a step in the right direction in many ways.

I'm pretty sure as with anyone there are people who will like and dislike it. I consider myself a normal person as I'm not a computer science person or a developer or even engineer. So I have basic knowledge about a computer. I personally have mixed feelings about windows 8. I love that they have a tablet operating system finally, where it is touch-based. But there are things I don't like about the user-interface and experience specifically tied to the desktop. I'm sure many are also having mixed feelings. But a lot also don't care about it period.

First off, flying an airplane is non-intuitive, but not impossible. First learning to navigate one's way around a computer UI is also.

As you can see, I've arranged the pictures of the planes in a time-progressive order. Orville Wright lived long enough and is rumored that he flew a Lockheed Constellation (pic #3) in 1944. He commented that the wingspan was longer than the distance of his first flight. Do you think it was intuitive to him? I don't think so, but it was not impossible.

What do you think he would have thought had he seen #4 and #5 and you told him he had to fly them? If he could have, do you think it would have been intuitive to him? I think not, but it would not have been impossible for him to learn. Each model got more complex and more sophisticated. So have MS OSs.

Well Area, you have that with people who do not know very well the OS

If i was your customer, no way you could pull that off. I leave the shop and buy elsewhere.

I buy what i want not what the seller wants. I speak in general, when i went for a new car, even if the seller offered a cheaper option, i still did what i want to do.

I think Windows 8 is a great improvement over Seven,if you can ignore the Modern UI!So much improvements,so much streamlining,so much cruft reduced,it would have been a hit if it wouldn't had forced the Modern UI on it's users!

Today , a customer with a very corrupted Vista, ask me if I can Install the new Windows 8, I make it try and after 2 minutes I sold him a Windows 7 + install fees. I have this customer since 15 years, he is living for pass all the Winter in Florida, in no way I will have left him on his own with Windows 8. I also invest today and order a box of 50 Windows 7 OEM, so I'm ready for the other one who will need it.

Smart planning.
