What Are You Listening To? [2]

It's Not Quite a Ripoff, But......

Two musical passages can be harmonically very similar, even if they don't have the same tune or the same chords.

In this song, listen to the part beginning "All the people..."

I'm referring not to the "piccolo trumpet" (which is like the one in "Penny Lane") but to the chords being played and sung.

Does it remind you of a certain OTHER Beatles song?

The Non-Girl Group

Remember the "Girl-Group" sound of the early and mid 60's? The Shirelles, The Marvelettes, The Chiffons, The Cookies, The Dixie Cups? The howling lead vocals, the high-pitched chorus backing, the exaggerated pronunciation, the old-fashioned pop song structures, and the cheap mini-orchestra arrangements?

This hit record from 1963 had all of that. It's a typical girl-group song in every way -- except that they weren't girls. And I liked the record myself, so this isn't a negative comment.

A Two-Way Message?

Paul Revere and the Raiders, though quite popular and commercially successful, were considered a very lightweight and unimportant group (and I agree). Usually it didn't matter what they sang, because their fans were "teenyboppers" who just danced to the music and didn't notice the words, while the rest of the listening public ignored the group completely.

In 1966, they were scorned for recording this anti-drug song at a time when drugs and pro-drug songs were "in". But what nobody seemed to notice is that "Kicks" was not MERELY an anti-drug song; it also contained what sounds to me like a hint, or suggestion, that the right way to get your "Kicks" is through SEX instead of drugs -- which I, and many people at that time, would have agreed with. So it's possible that some of those who cried out in disgust at the Raiders' "establishment views" and "hypocritical stance" might have been a little less harsh if THEY had paid more attention to the words.

Don't Keep It Simple!

Every now and then somebody writes a song that's such a complex maze of chord changes, it would take a week to figure out for yourself how to play it exactly as written. Songs like that, including some very old pop songs as well as rock, have always fascinated me due to my interest in classical music and in music theory. And once in a while I actually wonder at the fact that songwriters go to all that trouble in cases where the song will probably never be heard by most of the public. I suppose those writers just love it and are doing it for fun.

An example is this song by Sandy Linzer and Bob Gaudio, which is so obscure I was surprised that YouTube has it. It's the mid-60's Four Seasons (hardly an obscure artist, of course) but this one was buried on an album so only the hard-core fans who bought their albums would be likely to hear it. What a lot of work it must have been to compose this! To play it exactly like the record, you would need to use 28 different chords. And several other songs on that album were complicated too.
