In "Help!" (the 1965 comedy film), in the frantic fight scene where the lunatics with guns and swords are trying to kill the Beatles, the background music was this famous piece from an 1850 German opera. As a result it became probably the best known classical music among 60's rock fans.

What a waste of good music!
Writing good music and junk lyrics is bad enough. What's even worse is insulting good composers by supplying THEIR music with junk lyrics.
I was raised on classical music (which is why I like the Beatles), and although I have great respect for the Tin Pan Alley pop music of the 1920's, 30's, 40's and 50's, I must say that some of the songwriters involved were so preoccupied with melody that they didn't think words mattered at all. It was possible in those days to have a hit record with a pure nonsense song.
Some time in the 70's there was a scene in a sitcom (or maybe in a movie, I'm not sure which) where kids are playing rock'n'roll records in the house and their parents hate it. Their father exclaims "I'm gonna show you kids what REAL music is!" He grabs a record off his stack of old pop hits and says "This is what your mother and I listened to when we were your age." When he plays the record, its words are so goofy and infantile that the kids go hysterical with laughter, and the parents are embarrassed.
Though it was a long time ago, I believe the song was "Hot Diggity", a #1 chart hit by Perry Como in 1956. Its words are the kind you'd expect to hear coming from a bunch of 6-year-olds at a birthday party. But its tune is classical music from 1883!
There were children's records then, and "novelty" (i.e. humorous) records for adults, too. But "Hot Diggity" was neither; it was considered a serious adult love song, despite its nonsense words. Some of my peers (i.e. children) liked it, and actually thought it WAS a children's record! I knew it wasn't, because my parents told me all about it and played the Espana Rhapsody for me. My private opinion, which I didn't dare express to my parents, was that "Hot Diggity" was junk regardless of its source. I appreciated classical music and serious adult songs, but I judged each song on its individual merits; the older generation never dreamed of doing an absurd thing like THAT!
