My friend has a very werid problem with his laptop screen that on occasions the screen suddenly goes wild and starts to jump to a larger the resolution and keeps jumping all over the shop all by itself. The only thing to do to stop it is to power the laptop off.

I have scanned the laptop with Malwarebytes anti-malware and remove some threats and it seemed to have worked but a few days later it all started to happen again and my friend scanned the laptop with Malwarebytes anti-malware again and with Norton but no threats were found.

It seems to happen when he is connected to AOL (UK). I will be going over later today and see if the issue happens in the BIOS and/or when in safe Mode.

In the meantime I wonder if anyone could help with identifying what might be causing the screen to go wild.

Try to use the computer for a while without ever going into AOL, to confirm whether or not this is true. After many days of no AOL and no occurrence of the screen issue, try connecting to AOL to see if the problem comes back. If the only time it ever happens is when he is connected to AOL, then it has to be caused somehow by being connected to AOL.

Thanks mrjimphelps for your input.
Just to update you. The issue did not happen when I booted into the BIOS or while in Safe Mode. I have accessed the AOL (UK) email account directly within IE rather than AOL own application and the issue did not happen. I have asked my friend to use IE to access his AOL email account for the next two weeks to see if the issue occurs as to see if it is AOL own application that is causing the issue.

It seems that the issue does not happen every day it sometimes takes two or three days to return.

I will update this post when my friend confirms if the issue returns or not.

The AOL app could be slowly leaking memory; that could explain why it takes a while for it to finally fail.

Have had myfriend not using AOL application for a week now to access his AOL emailsand instead using IE and Chrome and the issue did not manifest itself.
So I am nowcompletely satisfied the the cause of the issue was the AOL own application andI will uninstall it the nexr time I visit my friend.
