war between Microsoft & Google?

Other than the obvious is there a war going on between Microsoft & Google? I tried a new computer with Windows 8 factory installed and after downloading my favorite browser, Google Chrome, and trying to use my favorite email, gmail, I got very inconsistent results, i.e. sometimes Google wouldn't open at all and when it did I often couldn't get gmail to open. I tried everything I could think of to correct the problem but in the end, out of total frustration, I returned the computer and have gone back to my Windows 7 notebook.
It would seem that Windows 8 is really only smooth if you use Bing and an email like hotmail, neither of which I'm willing to switch to..

That's simply not the case. You can install Chrome just fine, and there's even a Metro version of it if you want to use it that way. Gmail works fine, and there's even some google metro apps like a google search app.

Google has been slow to support IE10 in it's sites though, and gives bogus messages about using an old browser.

So why does google not load but just sits there with the wheel turning. A message appears at the bottom of the display, sending proxy and then waiting for proxy and then nothing happens.

I repeatedly try to open gmail and get nothing.

Sounds like you have a mis-configured proxy. I can assure you, gmail works just fine.

My Google Chrome work will on the desktop and in the Metro, myname@mydomain.ca is on Google Apps (gmail servers) and it work fine too. Please provide us more info about your networking setup and the info you collect with ipconfig ( command prompt ) and we may assist you more.
