Last few updates I have had the above occur. Researching this, I see it has been a problem for quite a while. Is there a solution? Thank you

Yes! STOP receiving MS Updates on a program (OS) that they have already declared DEAD.
(STOP putting lipstick on a pig)
Just turn Updates OFF and don't look back. You'll be just fine, like me and thousands of other 8.1 users.
MS just wants you to buy Windows 10, so they will mess up your OLD OS, so you'll make the jump.
