[URGENT] Can't Refresh or Boot

Hey everyone!

This is my first post here at EightForums, and hopefully I can get help with an ongoing trouble I've had for the past day. (Not sure if this is where the thread should go...)

Now, here's the main problem. I don't think Windows 8 is picking up my partition, or is it? The laptop technically crashed in this situation.

Windows 8 is installed on C: Drive.

Before the crash, I was simply installing the latest AMD Catalyst and VISION Engine Control Panels whilst surfing Facebook. I'm not sure if the problem is directly linked to this or not. After the AMD stuff installed, it let me choose whether or not I want to reboot now or later, so I left it open until I could close Facebook, that's where troubles start.

The bar at the top of Chrome went invisible, and everything started flickering so I Alt Tabbed to the prompt for rebooting and hit reboot, and went to get a coffee.

I come back to my laptop expecting a login screen, but instead I'm greeted with a blue screen showing that winload.exe is either missing or damaged or something... so I've been trying everything in a command line from my install disc.

I've tried all the BCD backups, tried fix MBR, all that. One led to a problem where it said "The Boot Configuration Data (BCD I assume) is damaged" or something, but I had a backup so I renamed it back to BCD from BCD.OLD and now I'm back at the same winload.exe screen.

Refresh Your PC didn't work either, I'm getting a drive locked error, and yes I tried clearing attributes...

In Diskpart I've tried List Partition, and it showed my 100GB D: called Data, my System Recovery Partition of 100MB and my C: with 300 or so gigabytes, and it's extended, not primary.

I've tried setting it active, won't work.

I need this laptop for a lot of data and a resume I need to turn in for a job interview tomorrow.

Need help. :/

Ceejay

The practical, and recommended, *( By me ) thing is to have a CD/DVD clean install version of Windows 8 or any other Windows OS for other times/computers. The problems with after market upgrades, or factory installed Windows 8, is that there isn't a disc. I've been stuck too many times.

Windows 8 comes in three versions and two selections. Regular, Pro and commercial for large corporations and government. Windows pro is sold as either an upgrade version or a complete version. Around my area Windows Pro complete sells for $69.99 US Dollars.

By installing the disc and booting it should get you back on line. It also contains some fix/repair features. There is also the old procedure or rebooting while tapping repeatedly the F-10 key which brings up a diagnostic/repair menu.

You may have been hacked by bandits. You may have a worm or virus. Or you may have a conflict with other software. Yours is a very common problem that is seen often on these forums wherein the protection software conflicts with Windows 8. One remedy there is to uninstall the software and reinstall it. Too it is necessary sometimes to go into the registry and delete some unwanted remnants of other useless software that is still embedded.

Windows 8 Defender and Firewall is considered to much improved and among the best FREE software. However, commercial software is recommended for enhanced protection.

Do you have an appropriate start up medium (e.g., an Install DVD or Install Thumb Drive)? I assume you do. If so try several of the repairs available after passing the Language screen--system restore and automatic repair.

Hey mate.

Thanks for the reply.

I have or well HAD Windows 8 Pro as a complete disc bought from Dick Smith Electronics here in Australia.

I was running Avast Antivirus but I had it turned off because prior to installing the AMD thing, I was playing a game and needed faster performance so it's obvious as to why.

I can still get a command prompt through my Windows Install Disc for 8 Pro, anything I can do from there?

I have the complete Master Collection from Adobe that I used my student college discount on, and I can't afford to lose that AMONG other things...

Anything I can do without reinstalling the whole OS losing the data? Or is there another way to do it without removing the laptop's HDD?

Tried both man. No success :( I don't have a restore point either ;-;

Alright thanks man, much appreciated.

I've tried this Live CD Recovery thing to access the HDD via Midnight Commander, but it only detects my Data drive?

You can do everything through a command prompt using MSDOS but I think it will take a professional to make it work. It can get very complicated as well as precarious.

By way of clarification, when I said uninstall software and reinstall it I was referring to the Anti Virus software, not the OS.

So far as I know from previous, using the OS disc won't delete any files. It may say there is already a version installed but there should also be some reference to repair features.

This shouldn't be confused with the recovery discs that will reinstall all original factory installed software like the day it was new. That will certainly remove everything and sweep the hard drive clean.

I fear that you didn't make a set of recovery discs. When you are back on line - highly recommended.

Further it pays to have backups of all important files. This can be accomplished by using an external hard drive.

I've got multiple external HDDs, and I made a backup about 1 month ago but my stuff from previous that I need would be missing.

If I made a recovery disc from a friend's laptop that runs W8Pro, would that work?

Also if I didn't mention it in the OP, when I try rebuilding the BCD, it says 0 Windows Installations...

Check out the things mentioned in this thread. Maybe something you haven't tried will appeal to you. Merry Xmas. Good luck.

Again man, thanks so much for you help. Merry Christmas to you also, have a safe one!

I got Windows 8 installed on my Data D:/ drive, and I'm trying to recover the partition, it's 330GB of unallocated space but I know everything is there...

Yeah man. Tried Ubuntu, and I've got no use... I tried Zorin as well, considering I've got that on my Linux NetBook, but no luck.

I'm using a utility on Windows 8 that I downloaded to access the drive, but the files are split up so I need something else. EaseUS was going to take 41 hours... :/

hi Ceejay,

why not just reinstall Win 8 and reinstall the programs. You have your data on a second drive or partition, so that can be left alone.

If not.....then you are in trouble.

this will be the fastest solution for you.

OK, here is an incredibly unlikely-to-work solution. Do you have a friend with a Mac? You will need firewire ports on both computers (and a cable :) ). Or, if the Mac has Thunderbolt, but no firewire, then you'll need a thunderbolt to firewire cable. It also is possible that you would need a firewire 800 to firewire 400 cable. Anyway, you could try putting your computer into firewire target disk mode for access to its hard drive. I sometime used to be able to get this approach to work with some Win machines under Vista (haven't tried since Win7 and Win8 came out). Obviously, it is very unlikely to work, in general, with Win8. It's easy to find instructions for using "firewire target disk mode." But, if you can't find, the post back. I am on a tight Xmas schedule today--flying across the country.

I'll try man, I've got a friend with a MacBook Air. Anyway, I greatly appreciate all your help! Enjoy your flight/s and Christmas in general, and be safe man. I'll look into what you suggested :)
