Hi,

I am going to upgrade my Windows 8.1 laptop to Windows 10 as it currently allows Windows 8.1 users to upgrade to 10 for free.

What is the best way of upgrading from Windows 8.1 to 10? Can I just use the Windows notification that appears on the desktop, saying "Get Windows 10"? Or will that not work?

Also, will I need to install drivers, or will they install for me? I am currently running Windows 8.1 and am upgrading to 10, so am not wanting to totally wipe the drive and reinstall the OS.

Thanks!

Furthermore, will Windows 10 adversely affect the performance of the current windows 8.1 machine? It doesn't run the quickest on windows 8.1 so am just a bit nervous that it will slow down even more on windows 10. Thanks.

First check if the laptop is compatible with windows 10. Look at the websitepage for your laptop for info and guides.

I have a Win 8.1 laptop upgraded to Windows 10. I did not have issues with drivers.
My laptop was 6+ years old before the upgrade.

There are 2 ways to upgrade:
1. Use the Windows Update as you have mentioned.
2. Use the Media Creation Tool or Tech Bench to do the in-place upgrade install.

For an in-place upgrade, you have the choice of keeping your settings, files and apps (most of them), or keep nothing. Product key is not required. Activation is automatic.
