Hi Everyone.

I wish to upgrade my pc from Windows 7 Home Premium 64 to Windows 8 Professional 64.

I have purchased and received the Windows 8 Professional (Upgrade Edition) 32/64 DVDs.

I have a few questions tho.

Do I need to disable Norton Internet Security (NIS) 2013, before I proceed with the upgrade (Keeping all apps, settings, and files) ?

Would I need to reinstall NIS 2013 after upgrade is completed ?

How long (on average) am I looking for the upgrade to fully complete from start to finish ?

And finally, does everything transfer successfully (as I'll be using the 'Keep all apps, settings, and files' option) ?

Many thanks.

It's my understanding that Windows 8, like Windows 7, has all version content on every install DVD (or download iso for that matter) and you can use Windows Anytime Upgrade to go from Home to Pro to ... and I'm sure I remember reading you could use the key from a purchased Win 8 Pro DVD to do this. You would lose nothing doing it that way as all it really does is unlock the upgrade features.

Unfortunately I can't find the steps you need to do this with any of the Google searches I've made. Hopefully someone remembers what I'm talking about.

I suggest you make an imge first.

It might go wrong, or you might realise you prefer 7.

Better to be safe and have that image backup.

You can use the free version of macrium for example:

Macrium Reflect FREE Edition - Information and download

How long it takes will depend on your system - how much you already have on your drive, etc.

I have already done a complete full backup of my system (all partitions on 1Tb drive).

Just two questions remain to be asked, which were...

Do I need to disable Norton Internet Security (NIS) 2013, before I proceed with the upgrade (Keeping all apps, settings, and files) ?

Would I need to reinstall NIS 2013 after upgrade is completed ?

If it helps, I will be doing an in-line upgrade, using the Windows 8 64-bit DVD (Upgrade Edition). I'm not doing an Anytime upgrade, as that doesn't work on OS upgrades from 7 to 8.

I would not do an upgrade installation. Often they do not fare well. I would use: Clean Install with Windows 8 Upgrade and Clean Install - Windows 8.

Question answers: No and no. Why not run the Win 8 Upgrade Assistant; it provide useful info: Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant - Download and Run.

I would uninstall & reinstall, when you have upgraded to Windows 8.

Or at the very least, disable, though reinstalling it wouldn't hurt.

BTW NIS 2013 is compatible with Windows 8 so you'll have no issues there.

Hi.

I have successfully managed to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 Pro via the in-place upgrade route and 'Keep all apps, settings, and files' option. Upgrade took 1 hour :)

I did disable NIS & Diskeeper. I also deauthorised iTunes. I then enabled NIS & Diskeeper, and re-authorised iTunes.

Only had two minor issues, printer got uninstalled (probably due to me disconnecting the PC from my network and Windows couldn't find printer) and microphone settings got reset to zero volume and zero boost (weird :S). Managed to fix both issues tho, and am now enjoying Windows 8 and the very fast bootup (in Windows within 10 seconds from power on :)).
