Solved Upgrade to W10 FORCED UPON ME.

This morning I have the dreaded 'Upgrade to W10' showing in Windows Update. I HAVE DONE NOTHING TO INVITE THIS. I never accepted the invitation for W10 and used Shawns reg tweak to remove the GWX icon a few months ago.

Yesterday I did install KB3083711 (update to Windows Update) BUT NOT KB3035583 which was another W10 compatibility update. Has KB3083711 some other hidden function ?

MICROSOFT. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. I do not want W10 on this PC. This PC has not been able to install W10. Dell say this PC is not suitable for W10.

Whinging here won't achieve anything, I know that, but I am seriously considering rolling back to way before all this W10 stuff started and turning OFF Windows Update.

I WANT THE W8.1 THAT I PAID FOR OUT OF MY OWN MONEY.

W10 makes me feel that the PC isn't mine anymore... I have no control over what Microsoft are foisting on me.

I would have liked to have seen an opt out update be issued that would take users like myself out of the W10 loop.

EDIT... One important bit of info. I have Windows Update set to notify only. Seems that was no barrier in this case.

You should let it go through and then get a lawyer and sue them for loss of productive time loss of data, emotional pain and what ever else comes to mind. No should mean NO! Maybe hacking laws or what ever could apply, because they are making unwanted changes.

Definitely agree with you on that one. NO is no.

This is like someone having bought some item/object/product, a new car maybe, or a TV or whatever and then having the manufacturer come along and swap it out for something different, something that given the choice, you would not have wanted.

I also have some paid for software that is not W10 compatible. Its not on !

Thanks Cliff.

I'm actually part way through rebuilding an image that is 'just Windows' and that also has all the correct drivers installed. Nothing else. It was fully updated to end of April I think and so it should be good to go without any of the W10 stuff. Defender seems OK updating via a task I set up even though WU is OFF. Yea :)

I will see where all this gets me for now, and its a chance to grab the most up to date versions of software such as LibreOffice etc.

(Yes, I have month end images going back all year. I knew the 'just Windows' ones would come in useful at some point)

Today I also noticed that an upgrade to Windows 10 has showed up in Windows Update. I have updates turned off but when I manually check for updates this update is there and wants to download and install Windows 10. If I try to hide the update it does not hide and is always there with a check mark ready for download. If I'm not careful I might download and install Win10 in the future when installing future updates.

Is there a way to hide or remove this update?

I don't want win10 because I don't want to spend 2 months getting my system back to working the way I have it now with programs, etc., etc....
Why is Microsoft pushing 10 so hard, it makes you wonder what's going on !

I'm on an Android tablet just now, while I rebuild W8.1

Is there a link to W8.1 updates--- like a catalogue of KB numbers. There are some updates I would like such as IE11 cumulative security and so on. Is it possible to easily locate those and install as a stand alone package.

I went into the task manager under Microsoft>Windows>Setup> gwx and GWXTriggers folders and disabled ALL the tasks located there and it seems to have removed the Win10 update from windows updates, at least until they (Microsoft update) somehow works around it.

I had already done the registry hack to remove the Win10 icon from the task bar.

Might be of interest to you: Microsoft Re-Issues Windows 7 Updates Forcing Windows 10 Upgrade, Enabling Data Collection

Microsoft has a goal of bringing Windows 10 on a total of 1 billion devices by 2017, and in order to achieve this, the company knows that most, if not all of those on Windows 7 need to upgrade as soon as possible.

So to this, Microsoft offered some patches prompting users to upgrade and it turns out that the company recently re-released these to make sure that even if Windows 7 consumers blocked them, they still show up on their computers.

Woody Leonhard of InfoWorld writes that a total of six patches have been re-released and these include not only updates that are supposed to encourage the upgrade to Windows 10 but also bulletins that were previously used to enable data collection on Windows 7.
You should read the rest it list those updates too. I can only say 3 letters PUP

That is interesting, thanks.

Very difficult to know what to do for the best because there have been so many updates over the last few months that are/do seem W10 related. Ultimately, the descriptions accompanying the updates are open to interpretation making it difficult to know which are 'safe'.

Back to the rebuild......

That update is just another update to give you Windows 10.
They only haven't described it that way.

I have noticed this description before in previously updates and those updates are for upgrading to Windows 10.
This article describes an update that contains some improvements to Windows Update Client in Windows 8.1, Windows RT 8.1, or Windows Server 2012 R2.
Same is for this description.
This update performs diagnostics on the Windows systems that participate in the Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program. These diagnostics help determine whether compatibility issues may be encountered when the latest Windows operating system is installed. This update will help Microsoft and its partners ensure compatibility for customers who want to install the latest Windows operating system.

'improvements to Windows Update Client' just means some changes in the upgrade, in my words.

Morning Martijn, the problem with some of these updates is, for those that do not want Windows 10 they are literally PUP's(more like UP unwanted "programs");) And I'll bet that's why they stopped giving any real descriptions, to trick people into upgrading,.

I have 10 on both machines and love it, but not everybody does, and when it's forced, they'll hate it.

Just an update on all this. The super clean rebuild hit a snag which I'll explain in a minute...

Having hit this snag I thought long and hard about all this and felt that having to trawl manually through Windows Update catalogues was probably going to be a recipe for disaster long term. It would be unrealistic to think I could pick out all the applicable updates month after month for the next 'however many' years. How would I know which were applicable, it was bad enough having a trial run and just looking for security updates. Not workable long term......

What I have done is restore Septembers month end backup. That still gave me the W10 upgrade update which suggests that the updates I mentioned in post #1 were not responsible. We are set to notify only remember. So a coincidence. W10 was being pushed anyway. I then ran Shawns latest reg fix to disable the upgrade.

Upgrade to Windows 10 Update - Enable or Disable in Windows 7 or 8.1 - Windows 10 Forums

At this point no files have been added to my system, my free space is back up at 55.4Gb (it was down at 53. something before) and I now have just KB3083711 showing. I have hidden KB3035583.

And just what was the snag on the clean rebuild ? Well all was perfect until I imported my personal files. When my pictures were installed the live tile on the Weather App broke, not just the tile but the app itself. All you got was a blue screen and spinning globe. The live tile on 'Photos' wasn't responding correctly either. The finger of suspicion (unproven I must say) points possibly to the latest version of LibreOffice. There were compatibility problems some months ago with it breaking the 'kind map', which later versions corrected. Latest version is LibreOffice 5.

So there we go. Back on track sort of. As long as MS don't start playing games again.
