Hi folks
My wife's new Asus notebook is running on Windows 8.0 but all the recommendations indicate she should upgrade to 8.1. However, when she tries to do this, a message appears saying upgrade is not possible before the automatic update scan has been carried out. However, when the update scan has been done the same message appears again when trying to then upgrade to 8.1.
Any advice welcomed as to how to resolve this one.
(Never had these problems with good old XP)

Before upgrade to Windows 8.1 from the Windows Store, you do not need to install all Windows 8 updates from Windows Update. You only need to install KB2871389 update, then you’ll be able to install the Windows 8.1 update via the Windows Store. Download and install KB2871389 update from link or from Windows Update.

KB2871389 (direct download link)
- All supported x86-based versions of Windows 8: http://download.microsoft.com/downl...5E-794177982162/Windows8-RT-KB2871389-x86.msu
- All supported x64-based versions of Windows 8: http://download.microsoft.com/downl...49-140AB1CF7B5F/Windows8-RT-KB2871389-x64.msu

But if you've opened the Windows Store and you don't see the Windows 8.1 update, then you will need to also install KB2917499 update.

Thanks Berton and Genet for your advice; the Asus has been downloading/installing uploading all the updates for Windows 8.0 for the past 18 hours, believe it or not, so we're hoping that, once it's finished, we should be able to upgrade subsequently to 8.1. If not, we'll download the KB2871389 update as kindly suggested by genet. Can either of you advise me too as to how we find out whether we're using a 86 or 64 based version?
cheers

Many thanks
We're just about there now; managed to successfully get all the 8.0 uploads and we've uploaded and are now installing 8.1 although it's stuck at 82% installed for the last 20 minutes

Be patient, it will install. It can take many hours, especially if your Internet connection or the servers are loaded...
