How to Enable or Disable the Store Offer to Update to Windows 8.1

This tutorial will show you how to enable or disable the Store "Get Windows 8.1 for free" offer to update to the latest version of Windows.

You must be signed in as an administrator to be able to do the steps in this tutorial.

Note   Note
It is always recommended to update to the latest version of Windows.

This tutorial is provided in case you are having an issue with the latest Windows 8.1 version, and would prefer to wait until the issue is fixed or until the next new version of Windows is available to update to instead.

OPTION ONE

To Disable Store Offer to Update to 8.1 by Uninstalling KB2871389


1. Uninstall the KB2871389 Windows Update. (see screenshot below)​

2. When it's finished, click tap on Restart Now to restart the PC to apply. (see screenshot below)​

3. When your PC has finished restarting, check for Windows Updates, and hide the KB2871389 update to prevent it from being reinstalled.​

4. You will no longer get the "Get Windows 8.1 for free" offer, and when you open the Store now, you will still see the Update Windows item listed, but it will no longer open. (see screenshot below)​

OPTION TWO

To Enable or Disable Store Offer to Update using a REG File



Note   Note
The .reg files below are for the registry key and value below.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\WindowsStore

DisableOSUpgrade DWORD

0 = Enable OS upgrade
1 = Disable OS upgrade


1. Do step 2 or 3 below for what you would like to do.​
2. To Enable Store Offer to Update to Windows 8.1
NOTE: This is the default setting.​
A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.​

3. To Disable Store Offer to Update to Windows 8.
A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.​

4. Save the .reg file to your desktop.​
5. Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to merge it.​
6. If prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.​
7. When finished, you can delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.​
8. If you did step 2 above, then also check to make sure that the KB2871389 Windows Update has been installed.​
9. If you did step 3 above, then you will no longer get the "Get Windows 8.1 for free" offer, and when you open the Store now, you will still see the Update Windows item listed, but when you click/tap on the Update Windows item in the Store, it will now have Sorry, this update has been blocked by your system administrator. (see screenshots below)​

OPTION THREE

To Enable or Disable Store Offer to Update using Group Policy


NOTE: This option for using group policy is only available in the Windows 8 Pro and Windows 8 Enterprise editions.
1. From the Start screen, start typing gpedit.msc and press Enter when finished.​
NOTE: You could also press :winkey:+R to open the Run dialog, type gpedit.msc, and click/tap on OK.​
2. If prompted by UAC, then click/tap on Yes.​
3. In the left pane, click/tap on to expand Computer Configuration, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, and open Store. (see screenshot below)​

4. In the right pane of Store, double click/tap on Turn off the offer to the latest version of Windows to edit it. (see screenshot above)​
5. Do step 6 or 7 below for what you would like to do.​
6. To Enable Store Offer to Update to Windows 8.1
A) Select (dot) Disabled or Not Configured, click/tap on OK. (see screenshot below step 7A)​
NOTE: Not Configured is the default setting.​
B) In the left pane of group policy, click/tap on to expand User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, and open Store. (see screenshot below step 3)​
C) repeat steps 4 and 6A above.​
D) Check to make sure that the KB2871389 Windows Update has been installed.​
E) When finished, go to step 8 below.​
7. To Disable Store Offer to Update to Windows 8.1
A) Select (dot) Enabled, click/tap on OK, and go to step 8 below. (see screenshot below step)​

8. You can now close the Local Group Policy Editor window if you like.​
9. If you did step 7 above, then you will no longer get the "Get Windows 8.1 for free" offer, and when you open the Store now, you will still see the Update Windows item listed, but when you click/tap on the Update Windows item in the Store, it will now have Sorry, this update has been blocked by your system administrator. (see screenshots below)​
