Solved Update makes WSUS Win 8 compatible

An update for Windows Server Update Services 3.0 Service Pack 2 is available (KB2734608)

Win 8 didn't update with WSUS. This was released today. Works with Windows 8.

Maycolette,

I gather from your previous post that you could update Windows 8 just fine until you joined a domain. I further assume that error 0x80096002 is generated and your event log shows WindowsUpdateClient with Event ID 16.



You will run into problems if all of these conditions apply:

• Windows 8 is configured to receive Updates from a WSUS server instead of Windows Update (This is usually Windows 8 Pro or Enterprise in an Active Directory environment and a group policy is deployed to configure Windows to connect to WSUS for updates)
• The WSUS server is running on Windows Server 2003 or 2008
• Update KB2734608 is not installed on the WSUS server

Allow me to elaborate.

A domain membership in itself doesn't break Windows Update in Windows 8. It is only if Windows 8 is in a domain and a WSUS server is used that Windows 8 could run into problems and generate the 0x80096002 error when trying to update.

Before you proceed, verify that your Windows is configured to use WSUS:

Go to Control Panel\System and Security\Windows Update and look for

You receive updates: Managed by your system administrator

or check the related registry entries:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate]




Here is what you can do to fix it:

a) As a workaround you can bypass WSUS.

Check online for updates from Microsoft Update

b) Update your WSUS 3.0 SP2 server to version 3.2.7600.256 by installing update KB2734608




Note:

• You have to be WSUS administrator to do so
• You have to download and install KB2734608 manually as it is not synchronized via WSUS nor is it available in the Microsoft Update Catalog for import.

c) Use a WSUS server that is running on Windows Server 2012

One more thing, Am I going to do A, B, and C? I'm sorry, I am just a newbie.

It will suffice if you do one of the steps A or B or C

Which one you choose will largely depend on the status of your account in the domain. If you are a domain user all you can do is A (or nag your sys admin into doing B or C )

If you are the domain admin you can do any of the steps. A is the quick fix but it is only temporary as you have to do it manually each time you want to update. B or C will fix the problem for good.

one more thing, if I will update the WSUS server in Windows 2003, will it experience a server downtime? what will be the effect if I am in the middle of updating?

i got an error in connecting to one of the server. the error says "cannot connect to server name. the server may be using another port or different secure sockets layer setting"

This is perhaps beyond the scope of this forum and I don't consider myself a WSUS expert. I installed the Update without any problems whereas others have reported installation problems.

• It is a major WSUS update. Make sure your WSUS is in perfect condition before you apply the update. (Check synchronization, distribution of updates, event log, database)
• There will be a downtime for the WSUS Server but you do not need to restart the operating system
• Mind the annotations in the update description

WSUS must be in a known, good working state for this update to work. If WSUS is configured to synchronize updates from Microsoft Update, make sure that WSUS can synchronize updates. And, clients must be able to communicate with the WSUS server.

• Start the process with WSUS 3.0 SP2 that synchronizes with Microsoft Update.
• Apply this update.
• Start a synchronization.
• Wait for the synchronization to succeed.
• Repeat steps 2 through 4 for each WSUS 3.0 SP2 server that synchronizes to the server that you just updated.

• The first synchronization after the update takes much longer than usual

The update can reset the port used by the WSUS management console. Try to connect to port 80 or 443. Check IIS settings and SSL certificates.
