I've tried everything but Homegroup keeps rearing it's ugly head in Explorer's nav pane.
I went in to Change PC settings and Network and Homegroup, but since a Homegroup doesn't exist there is no Leave Homegroup option.
I even did a registry tweek to remove it and double checked the Attributes setting and it is correct to hide Homegroup.

I restored a clean image, like I do ever so often, and after the initial restore Home Group is hidden.
But, after installing some Windows updates it show back up again.

Any ideas what is going on.
I don't want, don't need, and don't want to have anything to do with Homegroup.

Since you don't have homegroup setup, therefore no option to leave the home group.
Open Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services
Then stop 2 services if they are running: HomeGroup Listener, HomeGroup Provider then double click on each and disable.

Homegroup should disappear from Nav Pane.
