Solved Unable to download updates to newly installed programs.

Hi. Not sure this is the right forum...if not I apologize. I have a new (2-weeks) HP computer with Windows 8.1 installed. I have tried to install two programs via CD, both successfully. However, when the new programs check for updates (both say there is one available), I get a message that the update was not successful, as I am not the administrator.
This is baffling, as I am the only user, and when I check, Windows shows me logged in as Administrator. (There are no other user accounts active at all).
I asked for user help for one of the programs thru their website, and they had me doing all kinds of different things: Clean Boot, "manually" download and install their update, etc., but nothing works. They, too, are baffled. Now they want me to create a separate "user account," and try that. But a "user" is not "administrator," and if it doesn't recognize me as administrator, it sure won't recognize an administrator in a user account.
I thought all this was the program/website fault, but when the same thing happened when I installed the second program, it got me to worrying that maybe there's something "off" in Windows 8.1.
Any help anyone can give me would be appreciated.
PS....I hesitate to post the names of the companies involved, or the software I'm installing, but I will if you all think it is OK. Both are fairly well-known companies; not fly-by-nights.

On the first program, that was one of the first things I tried. No luck. I just tried it on the second one, and it says it does not "support run as administrator." It suggested I login as a user w/admin. privileges.
Thanks for the suggestion, though. I had forgotten I hadn't tried that on the second program.

I only have the one account. At the initial setup, it opened with my Microsoft Account, and I've stuck with that ever since. I have no other account on this new PC.

In order to run an application with administrator privileges you need to locate the application executable, right-click on it and select Properties, followed by clicking the Compatibility tab and then make sure that the “Run this program as an administrator” option at the bottom of the dialog is checked.

Thank you! I will try this next. I'm pushed for time right now, but will do it as soon as I can (within a day) and let you know.
Thanks again.

Well, I can't believe this, but I can't find an .exe file. Here's what I tried: I put my app's CD in the disc drive, and when it asked me what I wanted it to do, I said, "open files." There are a number of Zip files, which, when I tried to unzip them, said "cannot open," but I right-clicked on each file anyway, went to properties, and looked for an administrator approval. There was none for any of them.
Still stumped.

You cannot open the zip files because there is another mini program that does that. Do see a file named Setup?

Yes, I have a Setup file. Its properties show a "general" and "details" tab. Under the details tab, there's a list of things; one says Owner and next to it, it says "everyone," but it doesn't seem to have a way to allow me to change that. And that's the closest thing to a "user" or "administrator" it has listed.

When you right click the setup file does it say Run as Administrator, if so click it.

I did find a "run as administrator" option on the setup file, clicked on it, and the installation started. When it finished, it asked to check for updates. I allowed it, but got the same message. "RT patch error, cannot download update."
Still no luck.:(

Different kind of error now. Suggest you get help from the program support site.

Well, I don't know what happened, but in desperation, I just closed the installed program, and shut down/restarted the computer. Then, after restart, I opened the program with "run as administrator." I OKd the update, and....it TOOK!
Still have some bugs to work on with the site support people, but at least I finally got the update.
Thank you so much for your help!
